All five programs come from public campuses of the Universities of Wisconsin. UW-Superior sits on Lake Superior and says it has offered distance education for over 45 years. UW-Whitewater runs a dedicated online site, and it calls its applied kinesiology master's the only fully online M.S. in kinesiology in the Universities of Wisconsin.

The in-state question has three different answers. UW-Superior charges every online undergraduate $377.50 a credit, plus a $40 online activity fee. UW-River Falls says its special graduate rates apply regardless of residency. UW-Whitewater is the only school that splits the price: residents pay $424.82 for the bachelor's and $666.32 for the master's, and everyone else pays $845.68 and $1,280.77.

Nationally, the median online rate is $445 a credit for bachelor's programs and $610 for master's. Superior and Whitewater's resident bachelor's rate sit below that bachelor's median. River Falls' two master's programs sit below the master's median, and Whitewater's resident master's rate sits above it.

Pay differs by job. BLS puts Wisconsin's median for exercise physiologists at $63,210, against $59,460 nationally, and the state has 340 of those jobs. Exercise trainers and group fitness instructors have a Wisconsin median of $44,200, against $47,160 nationally. Coaches and scouts have $44,800 against $47,320. Don't lean on the coaches' mean of $56,450, because a few high earners pull it up.

If you're weighing a program from another state, that school has to be authorized to enroll students where you live. Most handle it through NC-SARA, the national reciprocity agreement. Ask any out-of-state school to confirm in writing that it can enroll you in Wisconsin before you pay a deposit.

A program lands here when its school is based in Wisconsin and we've verified it as an online program, either fully online or with limited campus time. That gave us five programs at three schools. UW-Madison, Concordia University Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran College aren't here because their exercise science programs are on campus, and UW-Platteville's online master's is in sport administration.

When a school doesn't publish an input, we use the peer median and count that factor at half weight. Pay data comes from BLS and never changes a score.

How the Five Wisconsin Programs Differ

UW-Superior's B.S. in Exercise Science is the top Wisconsin bachelor's, at 65.5 and 6th of 46 nationally. It's fully online and semester based, and you need 120 credits including a minor. The catalog lists an internship of at least 450 hours, and fieldwork options include UW-Superior athletics, Essentia Health, Aspirus and the YMCA around Superior and Duluth. The school made exercise science a stand-alone major in May 2026.

UW-Whitewater's B.S. in Human Performance, with the Exercise Science Emphasis, scores 41.2 and ranks 41st of 46. That rank comes from cost, because our cost score uses the out-of-state rate of $845.68 a credit. It's fully online and asynchronous. You pick one of four online minors, including strength and conditioning, and finish with a 6-credit internship and a 3-credit capstone.

UW-River Falls runs the two most career-specific master's programs. Clinical exercise physiology is 34 credits, scores 57.6 and ranks 36th of 99. It has one lab weekend on campus each semester and a supervised internship in cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation.

Strength and conditioning is 33 credits, scores 55.3 and ranks 46th, with three gym weekends on campus. Both start in fall, spring or summer and can take as little as 12 to 16 months.

Both River Falls programs ask for a 2.75 GPA and a $56 application fee. Clinical exercise physiology wants a statement of interest and prerequisites in exercise physiology and statistics or tests and measurements. Strength and conditioning wants exercise physiology and human anatomy and physiology.

Whitewater's applied kinesiology master's is 30 credits, asynchronous and part time, and full-time students can finish in three semesters. You choose a practicum or a thesis. It scores 47.4 and ranks 68th of 99, again because our cost score uses the $1,280.77 out-of-state rate. Applicants who miss the graduate admission criteria can ask about contingent admission.

What Residency and Fees Do to Your Price

Start with Whitewater. A Wisconsin resident's 120-credit bachelor's comes to $50,978.40 in tuition, and a non-resident's comes to $101,481.60. For the 30-credit master's, the totals are $19,989.60 and $38,423.10. Whitewater lists these as starting-at rates for 2026-27, so confirm the current figure when you apply.

The other two schools have one price. Superior's $45,300 total is tuition only for 120 credits, and it's the same whether you live in Wisconsin or Texas. River Falls' totals are $19,278 for clinical exercise physiology and $17,820 for strength and conditioning. None of those totals includes fees.

Fees are where a sticker price slips. Superior adds $40 a credit for its online activity fee. River Falls adds segregated fees, which are $223.68 for one credit in fall or spring and climb as you add credits. Ask each school for a full-term bill at the load you plan to take, and check how transfer credits change your count.

File the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at studentaid.gov before you compare net costs. UW-Whitewater says degree students may qualify for grants, loans, scholarships or employment, and that aid priority goes by financial need and how promptly you apply. Filing early costs you nothing.

Wisconsin Programs and the Certification Rules

None of the five Wisconsin programs is verified as CAAHEP or CASCE accredited, and that matters for two credentials. ACSM's programmatic accreditation page says that from August 15, 2027, candidates for the Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) and Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) credentials must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, or one that has started the CAAHEP process.

River Falls' clinical exercise physiology page says graduates are ready to sit for the ACSM-CEP exam, and Whitewater's master's links to the ACSM-EP exam. Before you enroll in either, ask what accreditation status the program holds today and whether you'd be eligible if you finish after that date. The CEP also needs clinical hours on top of the degree: 600 with a master's, 1,200 with a bachelor's.

For strength coaches, NSCA's CSCS page says U.S. candidates need a bachelor's from a CASCE-accredited program from January 1, 2030. Until December 31, 2029, a bachelor's plus CPR/AED certification is enough. The rule names your bachelor's, so check the CASCE list for your undergraduate school too.

River Falls pays for your CSCS exam, which is a $475 fee for non-members. NSCA's 2024 pass rate for both exam sections was 41%, so budget study time.

Wisconsin does have accredited on-campus options. CAAHEP's list includes bachelor's programs at Marquette University, UW-Oshkosh and Wisconsin Lutheran College, and a master's in exercise physiology at Carroll University. CASCE's list names strength and conditioning programs at UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville. None of these is one of our five online programs.

When an Online Program From Another State Fits Better

If accreditation is your priority, start with our certification-ready list. Northeastern State University in Oklahoma has a CAAHEP-accredited online bachelor's at $279 a credit. It ranks 4th of 46 bachelor's programs, two places above UW-Superior, and its per-credit rate is lower than Superior's $377.50.

For a clinical master's with CAAHEP accreditation, Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania has three residency weekends and a 600-hour in-person clinical internship. The University of Mary in North Dakota charges $670 with a lab week each semester. Both cost more per credit than River Falls' $567 and ask for more campus time. That's the trade for accreditation.

For a general master's, the University of Florida ranks first of 99, needs no campus visits, skips the GRE and accepts any bachelor's major with a 3.0 upper-division GPA. Our best online exercise science degrees list shows the rest.
