Is exercise science a good major? It is if you’ll use it: as a base for physical therapy, occupational therapy or physician assistant school, or for a clinical, coaching or health education job. It’s a weak bet if you want a high salary from the bachelor’s alone. The middle bachelor’s graduate in this field earned $55,250 four years after finishing.
When Is Exercise Science a Good Major?
Exercise science works best when the degree is a step toward something you can name. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and physician assistant programs all want a bachelor’s with heavy science coursework, and this major covers a lot of it. Clinical exercise physiology, strength coaching and health education are the other jobs that match what you study.
It works less well if the goal is a professional salary in four years. The best-paid jobs next to this field sit behind graduate degrees. And if all you want is to train clients, you don’t need the degree. You need a certification.
Here’s how the common goals line up:
| If You Want to Be | Does the Major Fit? | What Else It Takes |
|---|---|---|
| Physical therapist | Yes, as a prerequisite major | DPT (about three years) and a state license |
| Occupational therapist | Yes, if you add prerequisites | Master’s or doctorate, then a national exam |
| Physician assistant | Yes, if you add prerequisites | Master’s plus patient-care hours |
| Exercise physiologist | Direct fit | Bachelor’s, often the ACSM-EP certification |
| Strength and conditioning coach | Direct fit | Often the CSCS certification |
| Personal trainer | Helpful, not required | A certification |
| Athletic trainer | Not by itself | A professional master’s |
The extra step is what you’re really paying for, so the next sections put numbers on the cost and the pay.
What Are the Pros of an Exercise Science Major?
The science is real, and it carries over. Franklin University’s online bachelor’s includes EXS 252 Exercise Physiology, EXS 351 Kinesiology/Biomechanics and EXS 460 Exercise Testing and Prescription. Health graduate programs and credential exams ask about these same subjects, so the coursework isn’t wasted if you change direction.
It opens more than one door. The same 120 credits can lead to a trainer job, a clinic job, a coaching job or graduate school. You don’t have to pick on day one, which helps if you’re 18 and still deciding. Our exercise science jobs guide lays out each path with pay.
Demand is growing in the jobs that fit. O*NET projects growth of 7% or more from 2024 to 2034 for both exercise physiologists and exercise trainers. Trainers have 74,200 projected openings and physiologists 1,700. Fast growth in a small job still means few openings, so use both numbers.
You can study it online, and prices vary a lot. We track 46 online bachelor’s programs. The University of the Cumberlands charges $220 per credit, and that rate includes books and fees. Northeastern State University charges $279 for out-of-state online students. Other programs charge over $800 per credit.
What Are the Cons of an Exercise Science Major?
The job with the degree’s name is small. BLS counts 8,560 exercise physiologists nationwide. The median is $59,460, and the range from the 10th to the 90th percentile runs from $42,760 to $80,560. O*NET asked workers what a new hire needs. 50% said a bachelor’s degree and 42% said a master’s.
The high-volume job doesn’t require the degree. There are 322,930 trainers and group fitness instructors in BLS data. Their median is $47,160, and the 10th percentile is $28,800. O*NET’s worker survey most often names a postsecondary certificate (38% of respondents), and it lists certifying bodies such as ACSM and ACE. A degree can help, but it isn’t the gate.
The big pay jumps need another degree. Physical therapists have a median of $102,760, which is $43,300 more than exercise physiologists ($102,760 minus $59,460). But APTA says DPT programs typically last three years, and that most DPT students graduate with student loans.
Some people argue the major overpromises. The American Society of Exercise Physiologists published an essay in 2009 titled “Exercise Science Is Not a Sound College Investment.” Its author argued that some exercise science degrees look like physical education degrees under a new name.
We don’t agree that no jobs exist, because BLS counts them. But the point about course lists holds up, and it’s why we tell you to read them.
Credential rules are changing. From August 15, 2027, ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, or one in the process. From January 1, 2030, U.S. CSCS candidates need a bachelor’s from a CASCE-accredited program. Only four programs on our list are CAAHEP-accredited, and five are CASCE-accredited.
Online has limits. Of our 168 online programs, 29 add in-person requirements such as internships or residencies. And DPT and PA programs may not accept online labs for prerequisite courses.
Is an Exercise Science Degree Worth It Financially?
Compare what the degree costs with what graduates earn. Here are the figures we can source:
| Figure | Amount | Where It Comes From |
|---|---|---|
| Median published tuition, online bachelor’s | $54,240 | Our program data |
| Lowest online bachelor’s tuition, University of the Cumberlands | $26,400 | 120 credits at $220 |
| Strength emphasis, University of Missouri | $101,004 | 120 credits at $841.70 |
| Median earnings, bachelor’s graduates, fourth year | $55,250 | College Scorecard |
| Median earnings, master’s graduates, fourth year | $62,144 | College Scorecard |
Now the arithmetic. The median tuition of $54,240 is 98% of one year of median bachelor’s earnings ($54,240 divided by $55,250). The Cumberlands price is 48% of one year ($26,400 divided by $55,250). Missouri’s is about 1.8 years ($101,004 divided by $55,250). The gap between Cumberlands and Missouri is $74,604.
Read those with care. The Scorecard counts graduates who received federal aid and were working, not enrolled, across on-campus and online programs, and measures earnings in 2024 dollars. Tuition also leaves out living costs and income you give up while studying. Our exercise science degree salary guide covers the earnings side in more depth.
Transfer credit is the biggest lever. Franklin University accepts up to 90 credits. A student who brings 67 transfer credits would pay for 53 credits at its $398 rate, which comes to $21,094 (53 times $398). Our degree completion ranking lists the programs built for that.
A master’s is a separate calculation. The median online master’s on our list costs $20,200, and the Scorecard shows master’s graduates earning $6,894 more than bachelor’s graduates ($62,144 minus $55,250). At that gap, the extra pay covers the tuition in about three years. That’s a comparison of medians, not a forecast, and a master’s matters more for some jobs than others.
What Jobs Can You Get With an Exercise Science Major?
These are the jobs most often open to graduates, with BLS May 2025 wages:
| Job | Median | 10th to 90th Percentile | People Employed | Usual Entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise physiologists | $59,460 | $42,760 to $80,560 | 8,560 | Bachelor’s |
| Health education specialists | $64,070 | $42,990 to $118,200 | 65,690 | Bachelor’s |
| Recreational therapists | $61,960 | $40,990 to $100,420 | 14,930 | Bachelor’s |
| Exercise trainers and group fitness instructors | $47,160 | $28,800 to $83,100 | 322,930 | Certification |
| Coaches and scouts | $47,320 | $28,790 to $98,860 | 248,950 | Varies by level |
| Physical therapists | $102,760 | $77,140 to $135,140 | 267,330 | DPT |
| Occupational therapists | $100,330 | $71,690 to $131,950 | 162,450 | Master’s or doctorate |
| Physician assistants | $135,880 | $99,380 to $190,280 | 162,150 | Master’s |
| Athletic trainers | $62,520 | $48,180 to $88,760 | 30,500 | Professional master’s |
Notice how much the bottom half of the table depends on graduate school. Athletic training is the trap here. It used to be a bachelor’s profession, and it’s now a master’s-entry one, so an exercise science bachelor’s alone doesn’t qualify you.

Is Exercise Science a Good Major for Physical Therapy, OT or PA School?
It’s one of the most common majors for these programs, and it can be a good one. APTA says most DPT programs require a bachelor’s before admission, and its PTCAS directory lists each program’s requirements. Exercise science overlaps with much of the science those lists ask for.
But overlap isn’t a match. Every graduate program publishes its own prerequisites, and chemistry, physics and lab courses are where degrees differ. Franklin’s bachelor’s has optional Pre-Medical, Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Occupational Therapy focus areas that add biology, chemistry and physics. Oregon State’s online kinesiology bachelor’s takes the opposite stance: its page says the program “is not designed for those who want to pursue allied health careers.”
Ask each graduate program you’re eyeing whether it accepts online lab credit. Get the answer in writing before you pay for a course. Then compare our 40 online pre-physical therapy programs, and read our exercise science vs physical therapy guide if you’re still weighing the two.
Is Exercise Science a Hard Major?
It’s a science major. You’ll take human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, fitness testing and often statistics or nutrition. At the University of the Cumberlands, the online bachelor’s has 33 credits of major courses, including ESS 435 Physiology of Exercise and ESS 437 Tests and Measurements, plus a department exit exam.
Add the pre-health chemistry, biology and physics, and the load goes up. It isn’t a gym class. How you do in science courses is the best predictor, so if you haven’t taken an anatomy or biology class yet, take one before you commit.
Is Exercise Science a Good Major If You Study It Online?
For the coursework, yes. Of the 168 online programs on our list, 46 are bachelor’s, and 34 of those are fully online. The other 12 add in-person pieces or are built for students who already have credits.
Here are four that show the range:
-
University of the Cumberlands BS in Exercise and Sport Science. The lowest published price on our list at $220 per credit, or $26,400 for 120 credits, with books and fees included. It accepts up to 75% of the degree as transfer credit.
-
Northeastern State University BS in Health and Human Performance. Fully online, $279 per credit for non-residents, and the one bachelor’s on our list that carries CAAHEP accreditation. Every major completes a practicum, so ask how online students arrange it.
-
Franklin University BS in Exercise Science. $398 per credit, eight starts a year and pre-health focus areas. Students do field experience at a site they choose unless they take the capstone instead.
-
University of Missouri BS in Sport Science, Strength and Conditioning. $841.70 per credit and confirmed on the CASCE list. It costs nearly four times as much as Cumberlands, and it’s aimed squarely at strength coaching.

Does Accreditation Change Whether Exercise Science Is Worth It?
It does if you want an ACSM or NSCA credential. ACSM’s rule starts August 15, 2027, and points at CAAHEP, the accreditor for exercise science programs. NSCA’s CSCS page sets the CASCE rule for January 1, 2030.
Most programs don’t hold either accreditation. Only four of our 168 are CAAHEP-accredited, and five are on the CASCE list. If you plan to sit for the ACSM-EP or the CSCS, that filter matters more than the school’s name. If you plan to be a personal trainer, coach or health educator, it matters much less.
We track the programs that qualify on our certification-ready ranking. Our accreditation guide explains both rules, and the ACSM exercise physiologist and CSCS pages cover the credentials themselves.
How Do You Decide If Exercise Science Is Right for You?
Work through these steps in order:
-
Name the job or graduate program. Write down one target, even if you might change it. “Cardiac rehab” or “DPT school” counts. “Something in fitness” doesn’t help you compare degrees.
-
Look up what the target requires. Check the degree level, the certification and any accreditation rule. Three job postings or three program admissions pages will tell you more than a general guide.
-
Read the course list, not the degree title. Look for anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and exercise testing. Be careful with a list full of activity and coaching-methods courses.
-
Price it with your transfer credit. Ask for a written estimate and subtract what you already have.
-
Ask about in-person hours. Find out what the internship or practicum needs, who arranges the site, and whether labs are online.
Skip this major if you only want to train clients, since a certification is faster. Skip it too if you want athletic training, since you’ll need a professional master’s, or if your target graduate program rejects online labs and you can’t attend campus courses.
How We Checked These Facts
Wages come from BLS May 2025 data, and growth and openings come from O*NET. We read APTA’s page and the College Scorecard glossary on September 29, 2026. Program facts come from each school’s own pages and our program reviews, and the accreditation counts come from the CAAHEP and NSCA lists.
Tuition and rules change. Check the school’s page and the credentialing body’s page before you enroll, and tell us if you find something that doesn’t match.
