Exercise Science to Physical Therapy: What DPT Programs Require

Exercise science to physical therapy is a common route, and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) lists exercise science among the usual majors. But no major is required. You still need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree and a license, and what decides your application is the prerequisite courses, especially the labs.

That’s where an online degree needs a closer look. Most of the coursework moves online easily. The science labs are the part some DPT programs care about, and the answer changes from school to school.

Is Exercise Science Good for Physical Therapy?

Yes, with a condition. APTA’s admissions page says no specific undergraduate major is required and names exercise science, biology, kinesiology and psychology as common majors among DPT students. So the major won’t hold you back. It won’t carry you either.

A DPT program checks its own course list. Exercise science gives you exercise physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology, and APTA’s curriculum description names all three as DPT content areas. What a base exercise science degree often leaves out is the full chemistry and physics sequence.

Franklin University’s page shows the pattern. Its optional Pre-Physical Therapy focus area adds biology, chemistry and physics prerequisites to the standard exercise science degree. The base degree is one thing. The prerequisite list wrapped around it is another, and you have to plan for both from your first semester.

What Are the DPT Prerequisites?

Every DPT program sets its own list. APTA publishes the most commonly required courses, which makes a workable starting point until you check your target schools in the PTCAS Directory. PTCAS is the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service, the single application most (not all) DPT programs use.

APTA adds that DPT programs may require science prerequisites completed at a four-year college within the seven to 10 years before you enroll. If you took anatomy a decade ago, ask before you count it.

One more rule catches people. PTCAS asks you to enter every attempt of every college course, and its GPAs include every attempt of a graded course, plus withdrawals while failing, which count as an F. A retake doesn’t erase the first grade in PTCAS’s math.

Can You Finish Pre-PT Coursework and Labs Online?

It depends on the DPT program, and the policies are split. Here’s what four schools’ own pages said when we read them on September 29, 2026:

• George Washington University says prerequisite courses, including labs, taken online at any regionally accredited institution are acceptable, including for the 2025 to 2026 cycle.

• University of Findlay accepts online prerequisite courses, labs and bachelor’s degrees from regionally accredited institutions if the course content matches its list.

• Stony Brook University requires laboratory segments for its science courses and says online coursework is accepted.

• University of South Florida accepts online coursework from regionally accredited two-year and four-year U.S. schools. But it strongly recommends taking science and lab courses in person at a four-year university.

Four programs isn’t a rule. Yours may say something different, and APTA’s four-year and seven-to-10-year notes are reasons to ask. Get the answer in writing, save it, and make sure it names the course you plan to take.

Also check which lab you’re getting. North Carolina Central University’s online kinesiology degree delivers laboratory sessions as recorded video demonstrations. That’s an exercise science lab. It isn’t the chemistry or physics lab a DPT program lists, and a DPT admissions office may see them differently.

If you want the safe version, take chemistry, physics and anatomy labs in person at a nearby college while you do the rest of the degree online. It costs you some weekday hours. It also removes the question.

Which Online Exercise Science Programs Say They Cover Pre-PT Courses?

Our pre-physical therapy ranking lists 40 online programs: 24 bachelor’s, 4 associate and 12 master’s. Eight of the bachelor’s say they build in or can include PT prerequisites. Seven are below, in the school’s own terms.

The eighth, California Baptist’s kinesiology program, says its curriculum meets entrance requirements for health science graduate programs, including physical therapy. It’s a 50-credit major, so it fits students who bring general education credit with them.

Read these claims with a pencil. Parker lists General Chemistry I and College Physics I, and APTA’s common list has two semesters of each. Ask whether the second semester is in the plan. And “meets entrance requirements” describes typical programs, not the one you want.

Other schools name physical therapy as a destination without mapping courses. Kansas State, University of Saint Mary and Wisconsin-Whitewater are examples. Cameron University says its curriculum covers prerequisites required by Oklahoma physical therapist assistant programs. That’s the assistant route, not the DPT.

Salem University’s Biology, Physiology and Exercise Science specialization is worth a look if chemistry is your gap. Its course list includes organic chemistry, general physics, microbiology and anatomy and physiology. It’s a biology degree with an exercise science focus.

Should You Start With an Associate Degree or Add a Master’s?

Both routes work for different people. If you’re starting from zero, an associate degree lets you take the introductory science courses first, at a lower price. Georgia State University’s online exercise science pathway is 60 credits at $105 per credit, or $6,300 in tuition before its per-semester online learning fee. Its page says it provides prerequisites toward physical therapy.

Georgia State’s page also says some pathway courses may require you to attend a particular location, so ask which ones. And remember APTA’s four-year note and South Florida’s preference. A community college lab may satisfy some DPT programs and not others.

Transfer credit helps here. Franklin and United States Sports University accept up to 90 transfer credits, and Methodist up to 93. You can finish cheaper credits first, then move into a bachelor’s that maps to PT.

If you already hold a bachelor’s in something else, a master’s might look like the shortcut. It isn’t automatic. The 12 master’s on our list describe PT as a destination. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi says graduates go on to DPT programs, and a Calvin University graduate credited its Master of Exercise Science with strengthening a DPT application. Neither states that the degree covers prerequisites.

If you have missing science courses, take them separately and confirm the DPT program accepts them.

One exception is worth knowing. Hardin-Simmons University’s Master of Athletic Training has a direct-admission path to its DPT for students who meet GPA, GRE and interview requirements. It’s an athletic training degree, not exercise science, and it requires six one-week on-campus intensives.

What Else Goes Into a DPT Application?

The courses are only part of it. APTA’s admissions page lists the rest, and each program picks what it asks for:

• Observation hours. Many programs want volunteer or paid experience with patients under a licensed physical therapist, often verified by that PT. Arizona’s minimum is 20 hours.

• Letters of reference. Many programs ask for one to four, sometimes from a specific person such as a PT or a science professor.

• GRE scores. APTA’s page says most DPT programs require the GRE, and each sets its own minimum score and how old a score can be.

• Interview. Some programs interview competitive applicants on campus or virtually.

The PTCAS application costs $175 for the first program and $75 for each additional one. Six programs would cost $175 plus five times $75, or $550, before any school’s own supplemental fee. The cycle opens June 15 (or the next Monday), applications close June 1, and processing takes up to two weeks on average, so apply early.

A required internship or practicum in your degree might overlap with observation hours. Don’t assume it does. Ask whether a licensed PT can verify the hours for PTCAS.

What Does a Physical Therapist Earn and How Long Does It Take?

BLS OEWS data for May 2025 counts 267,330 physical therapists with a median wage of $102,760. The lowest 10% earned $77,140 or less and the top 10% earned $135,140 or more. O*NET projects growth of 7% or higher for 2024 to 2034, with 13,200 job openings. Those are projections, not a promise of a job.

Exercise physiologists, the direct-title job for an exercise science bachelor’s, had a median of $59,460. The gap is $43,300 ($102,760 minus $59,460). Our exercise science jobs guide covers what else the bachelor’s opens up.

The time cost is real. Most DPT programs need a bachelor’s first, and APTA says professional DPT programs typically run three years. APTA says about 77% of the curriculum is classroom and lab study and 23% is clinical education. Four years plus three is seven, unless you use a 3+3 format or freshman-entry program.

What Should You Ask an Admissions Office About Pre-PT?

Send these before you apply, and keep the answers in writing:

• Which prerequisites from my target DPT programs does this exact degree include, course by course?

• Are the chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology labs taught in person or online, and which department teaches them?

• Have graduates been admitted to DPT programs, and which ones?

• Does the required internship or practicum count as observation hours a licensed PT can verify?

• Do you have a pathway or partnership with a DPT program, and what exactly does it guarantee?

Then ask the DPT programs themselves whether they’d accept those courses. That second email matters more than the first.

What Are the Downsides of This Route?

It’s long. Seven years is a big commitment, and you’ll be choosing electives before you’ve seen a patient.

The online lab question is still open at some schools, and you won’t always learn the answer until you ask. Exercise physiology may not count for anatomy, physiology or biology. And most programs on our list mention physical therapy without mapping the courses, which puts the checking on you.
