How long is an exercise science degree? A bachelor’s is 120 credits and takes about four years full-time. A master’s is 30 to 36 credits and takes one to two years, an associate degree is 60 credits and two years, and a doctorate runs three to five years. Transfer credit, part-time study and accelerated terms can move every one of those numbers.
How Many Years Is an Exercise Science Degree at Each Level?
The years come from the credits. Take a degree’s total credits, divide by the credits you take each term, and you have your timeline. Everything else is a detail about pace.
Here’s what our own program data shows across the 168 online programs we track. Credits are the median for programs that publish a total. Finish times are the shortest and longest any program states in its own words.
| Degree | Programs on our list | Median credits | Full-time pace | Finish times schools state |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Associate | 11 | 60 | 2 years | 18 to 24 months |
| Bachelor’s | 46 | 120 | 4 years | 12 months to 5 years |
| Master’s | 99 | 33 | 1 to 2 years | 9 months to 4 years |
| Doctorate | 12 | 54 | 3 to 5 years | 2 to 5 years |
Look at how wide the bachelor’s row is. A bachelor’s that says 12 months isn’t a different degree. It’s the same 120 credits with most of them already behind you.
Doctorate credits range from 30 to 90 on our list, so that median hides a lot. The ranges below get specific.
How Long Is a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science?
It’s 120 credits. Of the 46 online bachelor’s programs on our list that publish a total, 36 land on exactly 120. Five ask for more, between 122 and 128 credits, including Maryville University at 128. Three count in quarter credits and list 180, and two list just 50 because they’re completion programs that count only the major.
Do the arithmetic. At 15 credits a semester, 120 credits is 8 semesters. Two semesters a year makes four years. That’s the plan Cameron University publishes as a four-year suggested plan, and the University of North Dakota’s kinesiology bachelor’s gives four years as its page estimate.
Fifteen credits is heavier than it sounds. The federal definition of a credit hour counts one hour of instruction plus at least two hours of out-of-class work each week for about fifteen weeks. That’s 3 hours a week per credit, so 15 credits is at least 45 hours a week. It’s a full-time job.
Quarter systems work differently. The same federal definition puts a quarter credit at ten to twelve weeks of work and a semester credit at about fifteen, which is why 180 quarter credits and 120 semester credits describe a similar degree. Lionel University uses quarters and lists 4 to 5 years.
And four years isn’t a promise. NCES reports that 64 percent of first-time, full-time students who started a bachelor’s at a four-year school in fall 2014 had finished within six years at that school. The federal yardstick is six years, not four.
Can Transfer Credit Shorten an Exercise Science Bachelor’s?
It shortens it more than any other lever. Twelve of the 16 online bachelor’s programs on our list that publish a transfer cap accept 90 or more semester credits. Start with 60 credits from a community college and you’ve finished half the degree.
Franklin University shows it clearly. It lists 120 credits, up to 90 transferred, and a calculator that gives 20 months using an average of 67 transferred credits, based on full-time study. The math holds up. 120 minus 67 leaves 53 credits, which is about 21 months at 15 credits a semester and two semesters a year.
California Baptist University counts differently. Its online kinesiology bachelor’s is 50 units on top of general education, takes up to 100 transferred units, and lists 16 months for a full-time student who has finished general education already. It runs 8-week sessions with six starts a year.
Concordia University-Saint Paul’s exercise science bachelor’s says one to four years depending on transfer credit, and as little as one year. The University of Missouri says a typical transfer student needs about 57 to 60 credits to finish.
Read the fine print on what counts. Cal State Monterey Bay’s completion program requires 30 credits at the school itself. The Citadel’s completion program takes courses with a C or higher and assumes general education is done before you arrive. Our degree completion ranking shows each school’s transfer terms.
How Long Is a Master’s in Exercise Science?
Most master’s programs are 30 to 36 credits. That covers 89 of the 94 master’s programs on our list that publish a total, and the median is 33. Of the 70 programs that state a finish time, the middle fastest pace is 12 months and the middle slowest is 24.
Full-time is where the one-year numbers come from. University of Florida’s online master’s is 30 credits, and the school says 1 year full-time or 1.5 years part-time, with an average of five semesters. In a year with three terms, that’s about 10 credits a term.
Other programs on our list, each with its own pace:
-
Ouachita Baptist University puts 36 credits into 12 months at a full-time pace, in 8-week and 16-week terms. It also starts with a two-day on-campus orientation.
-
California Baptist University’s master’s is 30 units in 12 months with a full course load.
-
Colby-Sawyer College is 32 credits over 9 months to 2 years, with starts in January or September.
-
Concordia University-Saint Paul’s exercise science master’s is 33 credits over 2 years, or 5.5 semesters.
Part-time roughly doubles it. Merrimack College lists 9 to 12 months full-time and about 2 years part-time. Our part-time ranking lists 30 programs built for that pace.
The slow end matters too. Fort Hays State says most online students take 6 credits a semester, including summers, and finish in 3 to 4 years. It also says students without a background in the field may add up to 18 leveling credits. If you’re changing careers, that’s the number to ask about.

What Is an Accelerated Exercise Science Degree?
An accelerated exercise science degree covers the same credits in less calendar time. Schools do it with short terms, year-round starts and heavier loads. It doesn’t cut the credits, and that’s the part people miss.
Short terms are common. Of the 97 programs on our list that publish a term length, 58 use terms of eight weeks or shorter. Our accelerated ranking lists 63 programs: 46 master’s, 12 bachelor’s, 3 associate and 2 doctoral. It includes any program with 8-week terms, a stated finish of 12 months or less, or a school description of itself as accelerated.
Here’s what speed costs. A 3-credit course at 3 hours a week per credit for 15 weeks is 135 hours of work. Squeeze it into eight weeks and it’s about 17 hours a week for that one class. Two at once is about 34.
The federal definition allows this, since it counts the same amount of work over a different period of time, but you still have to do the work.
Real examples:
-
Saint Xavier University’s strength master’s is 36 credits with an accelerated 12-month route, a 4+1 route at 10.5 months and a traditional 24-month route.
-
Salem University’s health and human performance master’s is 36 credits at one course a month, so as little as 12 months.
-
Colby-Sawyer College lists 9 months at the fast end.
For bachelor’s degrees, the same rule applies every time. When a school on our list promises under two years, it names transfer credit, finished general education or a completion format as the condition. Nobody on our list promises a from-scratch bachelor’s in under two years.
How Long Does an Associate Degree in Exercise Science Take?
Sixty credits, or four semesters. Angelina College’s online associate degree in health and physical education is 60 credits and lists 2 years. Eastern Iowa Community College’s exercise science and kinesiology associate degree is 62 credits and lists 2 years too.
Some are faster on paper. Bryan University’s applied exercise and fitness associate degree lists 20 months in 8-week terms. Lionel University’s associate degree counts in quarters, with 90 credits, and lists 18 to 24 months.
Two years is the plan, not the norm. NCES reports that about 34 percent of first-time, full-time students who started a certificate or associate degree at a two-year school in fall 2017 finished within 150 percent of normal time, which is three years for a two-year degree. Our associate ranking shows which schools let you transfer straight into a bachelor’s.
How Long Is a Doctorate in Exercise Science?
Three to five years after a master’s, judging by the programs that say. Concordia University-Saint Paul lists 67 credits for its PhD in Kinesiology and says students can graduate in as few as 3 years, with most finishing in 4. Its 61-credit EdD runs on the same schedule.
The University of North Dakota’s PhD is 90 credits and lists 4 to 5 years. It accepts up to 30 credits from a master’s with committee approval. Concordia accepts up to 12 credits with a related master’s, or up to 24 with its own master’s in exercise science.
Twelve of Concordia’s 67 credits are the dissertation. Coursework runs on a schedule. A dissertation depends on your topic, your committee and your data, so it’s the part with the least predictable finish date.
Add the levels and you get the full picture: 4 years, plus 1 to 2, plus 3 to 5, is 8 to 11 years on paper. The ACSM exercise physiologist credential asks for a bachelor’s, not a doctorate. Our doctorate ranking covers the programs for people who do.
What Can Make an Online Degree Take Longer?
Five things stretch a timeline, and none of them show up in the headline number.
In-person hours. Twenty-nine of the 168 programs we track add in-person requirements such as an internship, practicum or residency. Parker University’s bachelor’s requires either an 80-hour observational practicum or, for the strength and conditioning concentration, a 300-hour, 12-week full-time internship. Logan University’s strength master’s requires two field experiences of at least 150 hours each.
Leveling courses. Fort Hays State’s up-to-18-credit add-on is the example, and it’s a big one for career changers.
Start dates. Georgia Southern’s coaching master’s starts one cohort a year, in summer, and its 13 months run from that cohort start. Miss it and you wait.
Time limits. Parker lists a minimum of 10 terms and a maximum of 15 for its bachelor’s. University of Florida’s master’s expires coursework after seven years.
Life. Nothing above accounts for a job change, a baby or a bad semester. Build in slack.
How Long Does It Take to Reach Each Job Goal?
The degree is only part of the timeline. Here’s the path to five common goals, with the extra steps that sit outside the degree:
| Goal | Degree | Extra step | Time on paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise physiologist (ACSM-EP) | Bachelor’s in exercise science, exercise physiology or kinesiology | Adult CPR/AED | About 4 years |
| Clinical exercise physiologist (ACSM-CEP) | Master’s in clinical exercise physiology, or a bachelor’s | 600 clinical hours with a master’s, 1,200 with a bachelor’s | 4 years plus 1 to 2, or 4 years plus 1,200 hours |
| Strength coach (CSCS) | Bachelor’s, from a CASCE program starting January 1, 2030 | Current CPR/AED | About 4 years |
| Athletic trainer | Professional master’s | Board certification | 4 years plus about 2 |
| Physical therapist | Doctor of Physical Therapy | State license | 4 years plus about 3 |
The ACSM rows come from ACSM’s exercise physiologist and clinical exercise physiologist pages. Clinical hours are real time. At 40 hours a week, 600 hours is 15 weeks and 1,200 is 30 weeks. Details are on our ACSM exercise physiologist guide.
For athletic training, the two entry-level master’s programs on our list, Culver-Stockton and Hardin-Simmons, both list 24 months and require in-person clinical work. For physical therapy, APTA says DPT programs typically run three years. If that’s your goal, read our pre-PT guide before you choose an online bachelor’s, because lab prerequisites can add time.
Do Accreditation Dates Change Your Timeline?
They can, and this is where a four-year plan meets the calendar. ACSM says that starting August 15, 2027, ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, or one that has started the CAAHEP process. NSCA says U.S. CSCS candidates need a bachelor’s from a CASCE-accredited program starting January 1, 2030.
Do the dates. A four-year bachelor’s that starts this fall finishes in 2030, after ACSM’s date and around NSCA’s. Switching programs midway because yours isn’t accredited could cost you credits and months.
Check accreditation before you enroll, not after. Our accreditation guide explains both rules, and our certification-ready ranking lists programs that hold CAAHEP or CASCE accreditation. CAAHEP stands for the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. CASCE is the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education.
How Many Hours a Week Does Each Pace Take?
Use the credit-hour rule as a floor: at least 3 hours a week per credit. Then see what each pace does to your finish date.
| Credits per semester | Study hours a week (at least) | 120-credit bachelor’s | 30-credit master’s |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 18 | 10 years | 2.5 years |
| 9 | 27 | About 6.7 years | About 1.7 years |
| 12 | 36 | 5 years | 1.25 years |
| 15 | 45 | 4 years | 1 year |
These assume two 15-week semesters a year and no summers. Add summer terms and a 12-credit pace on a bachelor’s drops to about 3.3 years, since 120 divided by 36 credits a year is 3.3.
The 6 and 9 credit rows are where the timeline gets long. Check the school’s time limit before you go slow, and look at our working adults ranking for programs built around a job.
What Should You Ask a School About Timing?
Send these before you apply, and get the answers in writing:
-
How many credits does this exact program need, and how many will you accept from my transcript?
-
What’s the finish time for a student at my pace, not the fastest student’s pace?
-
How many start dates a year are there, and when’s the next one?
-
Are internship or practicum hours counted inside the timeline or added after it?
-
Is there a time limit on finishing, and does it apply to transferred credits?
If the answer to the first question is “it depends,” ask for a transcript evaluation before you apply.
How We Checked These Figures
Credits, terms and finish times come from each school’s own program page, recorded in the program reviews linked above as of September 29, 2026. Finish times are what schools say, not what every student gets. We re-read the ACSM, APTA, NCES and federal credit-hour pages on that date.
Schools change their calendars and transfer rules. Confirm your school’s current numbers before you plan around them. And if a school page says something different from what we’ve written, tell us.
