A program is on this list when its school states CAAHEP or CASCE accreditation, or NSCA recognition. We then check each accreditation claim against the CAAHEP program search and the NSCA's CASCE list, which shows 69 program rows. Nine programs matched.

The 13 that state recognition only are labeled recognized and never accredited. Inside each level, accredited programs come first, then recognized ones, and each group follows our score. Accreditation earns a place on this page but doesn't raise a score. The methodology shows the weights.

Which CAAHEP-Accredited Programs Work for ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP?

The ACSM programmatic accreditation page says that effective August 15, 2027, candidates for the ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP must graduate from an exercise science or exercise physiology program accredited by CAAHEP, or from one that has started the process with a formal inquiry or a Request for Accreditation Services. ACSM widened that in-process route in May 2026 and plans to reassess the rule in 2029.

Read the wording closely, because the accreditation has to be in exercise science or exercise physiology. Lake Region State College's CAAHEP listing is for Personal Fitness Training, an associate program. The ACSM-EP asks for a bachelor's, so that degree can't take you there alone.

For a bachelor's, Northeastern State University is the one option. CAAHEP lists its Health and Human Performance degree under Exercise Science, with initial accreditation dated March 18, 2022. The school offers an Exercise Science option and a Clinical Health and Wellness option, so ask which one the accreditation covers.

Tuition is $278 for residents and $279 for everyone else, across 120 credits. A practicum and a Professional Development Site are required, and the school's pages don't say how online students arrange them.

For the ACSM-CEP, Lebanon Valley College and the University of Mary both hold CAAHEP accreditation in clinical exercise physiology. ACSM's clinical exercise physiologist page asks for 600 hands-on clinical hours on the master's route and 1,200 on the bachelor's route. Lebanon Valley's degree is 33 credits at $789 a credit, about $26,037, with three residency weekends in Annville, Pennsylvania, and a 600-hour clinical internship.

Mary charges $670 a credit and expects a one-week on-site lab in Bismarck, North Dakota, every semester. It reports an 80% cumulative ACSM-CEP pass rate for 2015 to 2025, against a 65% national first-take rate in 2024. Neither program is a quick, fully remote option.

Before you enroll, look the exact degree up in the CAAHEP program search. A school can hold accreditation for a campus degree and not for the online one. Our clinical exercise physiology ranking compares all the online master's programs in that field.

How the CASCE Rule Changes the CSCS Degree Requirement in 2030

The NSCA's CSCS page says that effective January 1, 2030, U.S. candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a CASCE-accredited program to sit for the exam. Degrees earned outside the U.S. are exempt until January 2036. The prerequisites page says the current requirement, a bachelor's degree plus CPR/AED certification, stays in place until December 31, 2029.

That gives you two situations. If you already hold a bachelor's, you can test under the current rule for now, wherever the degree came from. If you'd finish a bachelor's after 2029, treat CASCE accreditation as a requirement, not a bonus.

Two bachelor's programs on this list qualify. University of Missouri's strength and conditioning emphasis is fully online, 120 credits, with three starts a year and no campus visits, though it requires an internship. Tuition is $707.50 a credit for Missouri residents and $841.70 for everyone else. A typical transfer student needs about 57 to 60 credits.

Parker University's bachelor's costs $777 a credit for 120 credits. The CASCE list names its strength and conditioning concentration, so choose that one. It means a 300-hour, 12-week, full-time internship in person at a site anywhere in the country, in place of the 80-hour practicum.

The three accredited master's programs work differently. The rule names a bachelor's degree, so as the NSCA words it, a master's doesn't replace a bachelor's from a program without CASCE accreditation. Ask the NSCA how it would treat your case before you pay.

The master's concentrations still cover the CSCS material well. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is 36 credits with six starts a year and no GRE. Mary's strength and conditioning concentration is nine credits, and it reports that 38 of 38 test-takers passed the CSCS over three years.

Accreditation gets you into the exam, not through it. The NSCA's exam description lists two sections, and you must pass both. In 2024, 41% of candidates passed both. The exam costs $475, or $340 for NSCA members. Our certification guide walks through the exam itself.

What NSCA Recognition Does and Doesn't Get You

Thirteen programs here are listed because their schools say the NSCA recognizes them. That's the school's statement. The NSCA's old Education Recognition Program page returns a not-found error today, and the accreditation the NSCA now lists is CASCE, with 69 program rows on its find a program page. The 2030 CSCS rule names CASCE. Nothing in the ACSM rule mentions recognition.

That doesn't make these programs poor choices. A recognized bachelor's still meets the CSCS requirement in force today, and several cost far less than the accredited options. Southern Utah University's master's is $393 a credit for 33 credits, about $12,969, though it requires a two-week on-campus summer session in Cedar City. Lionel University's bachelor's is $333 per quarter credit across 180 quarter credits, about $59,940.

Others are built for working adults. Citadel Military College's degree-completion bachelor's is $520 a credit for 122 credits with three starts a year. Maryville University's bachelor's is $575 a credit and requires two supervised practicums of 120 and 200 hours. If you only need a bachelor's to sit for the CSCS before 2030, any of these can work.

If you want the ACSM-EP or ACSM-CEP, recognition counts for nothing. Ask each program whether it has filed a CAAHEP formal inquiry or a Request for Accreditation Services, and get the answer in writing. ACSM says candidates from in-process programs must document the program's status, and that confirmation letters may come from the exercise science department chair.

Ask one more question at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania. CAAHEP lists a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Physiology there, with accreditation dating to 2008. The online program page doesn't say the online degree is that program, so we file it as recognized. Ask admissions in writing.

What Accreditation Won't Change About Pay or Personal Training

Accreditation protects your eligibility for a certification. It doesn't set your paycheck. The BLS OEWS data for exercise physiologists, May 2025, shows a median wage of $59,460 and a middle-80% range of $42,760 to $80,560, across 8,560 jobs nationwide.

So weigh the price. The median cost per credit across all 168 programs we track is $445 for bachelor's degrees and $610 for master's degrees. A $101,004 tuition bill for a bachelor's is hard to justify against those wages, and a $26,037 master's is easier to plan around if the ACSM-CEP is the job requirement you're chasing.

Personal training is a different story. The ACSM's personal trainer page requires age 18 and current CPR/AED certification, with no degree. If training clients is your goal, you don't need CAAHEP or CASCE at all, and the recognized programs on this list cost less than the accredited ones.
