Is an Online Exercise Science Degree Worth It? What the Data Shows

Is an online exercise science degree worth it? It can be, if you want a bachelor’s-level job such as exercise physiologist, or a bachelor’s to build on for graduate school, and the program is accredited, fairly priced and includes real hands-on hours. It’s a poor bet if you’re counting on a set salary, or on becoming a physical therapist or athletic trainer without more school.

Can You Get an Exercise Science Degree Online?

Yes. We’ve verified 168 online programs at 123 schools in 36 states, and we checked each one on the school’s own pages in September 2026. Of those, 133 are fully online. Twenty-nine more are online with a required in-person piece, and 6 are degree-completion programs for students who already have credits.

Many of these programs aren’t titled “exercise science.” The same coursework goes by kinesiology at 52 of our programs, and by sport science or human performance at 22 more. The exercise science label itself covers 46. So search all the names, or start from our list of fully online programs.

Is an Online Exercise Science Degree Legit?

It is when two things check out: the school’s accreditation and the program’s accreditation. A degree from an accredited school is a real degree whether you attend on campus or from your kitchen table. The trouble comes from schools that aren’t accredited, and from programs missing the specific accreditation your career goal will ask for.

Start with the school. Of the 168 programs, 94 are at public schools, 63 at private nonprofits and 11 at for-profit schools. Institutional accreditors named on our records include SACSCOC, the Higher Learning Commission, Middle States and NECHE. One school, Lionel University, names DEAC, a national accreditor.

You can confirm any school yourself in a few minutes:

1. Search the school in the U.S. Department of Education’s accreditation database (DAPIP).

2. Open its profile in NCES College Navigator to see its accreditor, graduation rate and net price.

3. If you plan on graduate school, ask that school whether it accepts your degree’s accreditor.

Then check the program. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredits exercise science programs on the recommendation of its Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences. Its search lists 161 programs with initial or continuing accreditation, and only one is flagged as distance: Lake Region State College’s associate degree in personal fitness training. That flag depends on schools reporting it, so confirm with the school.

Two rule changes make this more than a nice extra. From August 15, 2027, candidates for the ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP credentials (ACSM’s Certified Exercise Physiologist and Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist) must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, or one that has started the process, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

From January 1, 2030, U.S. candidates for the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) need a bachelor’s from a CASCE-accredited program, per the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). CASCE is the accreditation NSCA now names for strength and conditioning education. Today’s CSCS rule asks for any bachelor’s, and stays in place through December 31, 2029.

The online list is short. In our data, Northeastern State University’s Health and Human Performance BS is confirmed on CAAHEP’s list and is fully online. The University of Missouri’s Sport Science with Strength and Conditioning and Parker University’s Strength and Human Performance BS are confirmed on NSCA’s CASCE list. Can You Get an Online Exercise Science Degree With Labs?

Yes, though “labs” means different things at different schools. Exercise science labs cover things like exercise testing, movement analysis and fitness assessment. Online programs handle them in one of three ways.

Recorded video. North Carolina Central University’s online kinesiology BS says it has no on-campus labs. Its lab sessions are recorded video demonstrations, which the school describes as a key part of online delivery.

Materials shipped to you. American Public University System says its Sports and Health Sciences BS delivers labs online with lab-course materials mailed to students. Cameron University’s Sports and Exercise Science BS lists SES 4013 Physiology of Exercise Lab as an online course. Methodist University’s online bachelor’s includes KIN 4120 Lab Methods in Exercise Science.

Short campus visits. The University of Mary’s MS in Clinical Exercise Physiology requires a one-week on-site lab experience each semester in Bismarck, North Dakota. Lebanon Valley College’s version has three residency weekends in Annville, Pennsylvania.

The difference matters. Learning to run a treadmill test from a video isn’t the same as doing one with an instructor watching. If you’re heading to a clinical job or graduate school, lean toward programs with some in-person lab time. And if you want to fully skip travel, the video and mailed-kit programs are your options.

One more lab issue trips people up. Physical therapy, physician assistant and similar programs require prerequisite science courses such as chemistry, physics and anatomy with lab, and some restrict online lab credit. Ask each program you’re targeting whether it accepts the exact online course before you pay for it. Our pre-physical therapy ranking lists 40 programs that state a fit.

How Do Online Exercise Science Internships Work?

Online exercise science internships happen in your own community. You take online classes, and a gym, clinic, team or wellness program near you supervises the hands-on hours. That’s the deal at most schools. In our data, 29 of the 46 online bachelor’s programs list an internship, practicum or field experience, and so do 64 of the 99 master’s programs.

How much say you get in the site, and who does the arranging, varies a lot:

Notice the hours. They range from a 3-credit course to a full-time, 12-week, 300-hour internship at Parker. If you work full time, a program with a small, flexible practicum will be easier than one that asks you to leave your job for a semester.

The hours can also decide whether a credential is within reach. ACSM’s clinical credential, the ACSM-CEP, asks for 1,200 clinical hours with a bachelor’s or 600 with a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. Ask each admissions office one question in writing: “Who finds my internship site, and what happens if I can’t find one?” A school that answers clearly is a better bet than one that says students figure it out.

How Much Does an Online Exercise Science Degree Cost?

The median online bachelor’s on our list costs $445 per credit, and the median total tuition is $54,240. The 42 bachelor’s programs with a published rate run from $220 to $845.68 per credit. Master’s programs have a median of $610 per credit and $20,200 in total tuition, because they’re shorter.

Two programs show how far apart the price tags can sit. University of the Cumberlands charges $220 per credit, and says the rate includes tuition, fees and books. That’s 120 credits times $220, or $26,400. Parker University charges $777 per credit. That’s 120 times $777, or $93,240 before its per-term fees. The gap is $66,840 for the same length of degree.

Northeastern State University, the fully online CAAHEP-confirmed program, charges non-Oklahoma residents $279 per credit online. That’s 120 credits times $279, or $33,480. Our cheapest programs ranking sorts programs by cost per credit.

Two things move your real bill. Transfer credit can cut it sharply: Franklin University accepts up to 90 transfer credits at $398 per credit, and Cumberlands also accepts up to 90. What Can You Earn With an Online Exercise Science Degree?

For the direct-title job, the pay is modest. The BLS OEWS survey (May 2025) reports a median of $59,460 for exercise physiologists, with a 10th percentile of $42,760 and a 90th percentile of $80,560. There are only 8,560 of those jobs nationwide, per BLS. O*NET projects much faster than average growth and 1,700 openings for 2024 to 2034.

Here’s the arithmetic most people care about. The $54,240 median bachelor’s tuition is a little less than one year of the $59,460 median exercise physiologist pay. Cheaper programs shift that ratio, and expensive ones flip it. Our exercise science jobs guide covers the roles in more detail.

Who Should Choose an Online Exercise Science Degree, and Who Should Skip It?

Your goal decides the answer more than the delivery format does. Here’s how the common goals sort out:

Personal training deserves its own note, because it’s the largest job on the table with 322,930 workers. The NSCA-CPT (NSCA’s Certified Personal Trainer) exam costs $300 for members and $435 for non-members, and the ACSM-CPT costs $310 for members and $410 for non-members. Neither asks for a degree. A degree pays off there only if you want to move up or into other roles.

Physical therapy is the biggest step up in pay, from a $59,460 median to $102,760. But APTA says DPT programs typically last three years, and most require a bachelor’s first. Our exercise science vs physical therapy guide compares the two paths.

What Are the Downsides of Studying Exercise Science Online?

The degree has real limits, and some are worse online. Here are the ones to weigh:

Hands-on skill takes effort to find. Assessing a client and coaching an athlete are learned by doing. At many schools you arrange your own internship site, and the quality of that site is on you.

The job market is small at the top. With 8,560 exercise physiologist jobs nationwide, the direct-title role is a niche. Other roles people pursue with this degree, like coaching and personal training, have medians of $47,320 and $47,160.

Accredited options are thin. Only three online bachelor’s programs in our data have a verified CAAHEP or CASCE listing. NSCA’s older recognition list, which 14 programs on our site cite, isn’t the accreditation the 2030 rule names.

Prices vary wildly. The same 120-credit length can cost $26,400 or $93,240. Cheaper doesn’t mean worse, but price alone tells you nothing about quality.

In-person pieces surprise people. Twenty-nine programs require something on site, from a residency week to a 600-hour clinical internship. If the program page says “online” and never mentions these, ask.

So, Is an Online Exercise Science Degree Worth It for You?

It’s worth it if you can answer yes to most of these questions:

1. Does your target job or credential actually ask for a degree? Personal training doesn’t. Exercise physiologist, strength coach and graduate school do.

2. Is the school accredited, and does the program hold the accreditation your goal will need in 2027 or 2030?

3. Can you find an internship site near you, and will the school help?

4. Is the total tuition, with fees and after transfer credit, close to what you’d earn in one year in the job you want?

5. Do you have a plan for the labs, whether video, mailed kits or campus visits?
