Kinesiology Jobs: What You Can Do With an Online Degree

Kinesiology jobs fall into four groups: fitness and coaching, clinical exercise and wellness, health and safety work outside the gym, and licensed clinical roles like physical therapy. A bachelor’s in kinesiology, online or on campus, opens the first three. The fourth needs graduate school. Median pay runs from $36,560 for recreation workers to $135,880 for physician assistants.

What Kinesiology Jobs Can You Get With a Bachelor’s Degree?

Most people with a kinesiology bachelor’s start in one of nine jobs. The American Kinesiology Association’s careers page lists more than thirty paths, from aquatics director to biomechanist. The table below covers the ones with clear wage data from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025.

Read the wide ranges as a warning. The bottom of each range is what people earn early on or in small markets. The top is what you reach with years, a specialty or a management title.

Oregon State’s kinesiology department lists where its graduates land: personal trainer, coach, exercise physiologist and athletic program manager, with others going on to nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy programs. That mix is normal for the degree.

What Do Entry-Level Kinesiology Jobs Actually Look Like?

The jobs feel different from each other even though they share a degree. Here are the four that draw the most kinesiology graduates.

Exercise physiologist. You test and train people, often ones with heart disease, diabetes or lung conditions. O*NET’s reported job titles include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation practitioner and clinical exercise specialist. It’s a clinical job in a hospital or rehab program, and it’s small. Personal trainer or group fitness instructor. This is the volume job. You need a certification, and O*NET doesn’t list a degree as the gate. Your degree earns you programming skill, better work with older or injured clients, and a path into management.

Coach. High school coaching often needs a state coaching credential or a teaching license, and college coaching favors a master’s. Strength coaching is its own track, covered in our strength and conditioning coach guide.

Health educator or wellness coordinator. You run programs on nutrition, stress, movement and prevention for a health system, employer or public agency. The CHES credential is often preferred.

What Are the Highest Paying Kinesiology Jobs?

The highest paying kinesiology jobs are physician assistant, medical and health services manager, physical therapist and occupational therapist. All four earn above $100,000 at the median. Only the manager role can be reached without a graduate clinical degree, and it usually takes years of experience first.

The outlier is occupational health and safety. Specialists work on ergonomics and injury prevention, and a movement science background carries over. Which Kinesiology Jobs Need Graduate School?

Six of the jobs above need it, and the requirement isn’t flexible. Your bachelor’s gets you to the door.

Physical therapist. You need a DPT, a state license and, before that, a bachelor’s that covers prerequisites like anatomy, physiology, chemistry and physics. Athletic trainer. This surprises people. A kinesiology bachelor’s does not make you an athletic trainer. Entry now runs through a professional master’s from a CAATE-accredited program plus BOC certification, and O*NET shows more respondents requiring a master’s than a bachelor’s.

Occupational therapist, physician assistant, chiropractor and dietitian. Each has its own degree and licensing route. Kinesiology is a common pre-professional major for all of them, and PA programs also expect patient-care hours.

Here’s the online catch. A prerequisite lab taken online may not count. Many DPT programs restrict online lab credit, so check each school’s prerequisite page before you pick a bachelor’s. Our pre-physical therapy ranking lists 40 online programs with that in mind.

Do You Need a Certification for Kinesiology Jobs?

For most bachelor’s-level jobs, a certification does more to get you hired than the degree does. Three matter most, and two of them are changing their degree rules.

ACSM says candidates for the ACSM-EP and the clinical version, the ACSM-CEP, must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program starting August 15, 2027. A program that has started the accreditation process also counts. CAAHEP is the accreditor behind the exercise science committee that reviews these programs.

Can You Get Kinesiology Jobs With an Online Degree?

Yes, for the jobs that hire on a bachelor’s degree and a certification. Employers in fitness, wellness, coaching and rehab ask about your credentials and your hours on the floor. They rarely ask whether your lectures were streamed.

Which Online Kinesiology Programs Fit Which Jobs?

• Health educator or wellness roles: University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s BS in Kinesiology charges $380 per credit for 120 credits, or $45,600 in tuition. Its Health Promotion and Wellness concentration lists CHES exam prep, and courses run in 8-week and 16-week formats with five starts a year.

• Pre-PT, pre-OT and clinical exercise: Texas Tech’s online BS in Kinesiology says the curriculum prepares you for advanced study in physical therapy, occupational therapy, strength and conditioning and cardiac rehabilitation. It includes KIN 4306 Exercise Testing and Prescription and an optional 200-hour capstone internship.

• Clinical exercise with accreditation: Northeastern State University’s BS in Health and Human Performance is the online bachelor’s on our list with CAAHEP accreditation confirmed. It costs $279 per credit and includes a Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation course and a required practicum.

• Fitness and general careers: Oregon State’s online kinesiology BS requires 3 credits of experiential learning. The school states plainly that it isn’t designed for allied health paths like physical therapy, so read that before you choose it.

• Coaching: Georgia Southern’s MS in Kinesiology, Coaching Education runs $378 per credit for 30 credits. You have to be coaching while enrolled, and the cohort starts once a year, in summer.

• Performance and applied physiology: University of Florida’s MS in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology accepts a bachelor’s in any major, costs $585.75 per credit and lists CSCS, ACSM-CEP and ACSM-CPT among the credentials it aligns with. Our master’s in kinesiology ranking has 28 more.

What Are the Downsides of Kinesiology Jobs?

Kinesiology is a good degree with a few real problems. You should know them before you spend $45,600 or more on tuition.

The direct-title job is small. BLS counts 8,560 exercise physiologists in the whole country. Most kinesiology graduates end up in adjacent jobs, and the pay for those is often modest.

Fitness pay starts low. The median for personal trainers is $47,160, and the 10th percentile is $28,800. Your degree helps you climb, but the first job may not pay what the tuition suggests.

The best pay is behind more school. The jobs above $100,000 need a graduate degree, a license or both. That means more debt and more years, and an online bachelor’s doesn’t shorten those.

Online has limits. You can’t complete clinical hours or prerequisite labs in a browser. Plan for time in a gym, clinic or rehab program.

How Do You Choose the Right Kinesiology Job to Aim For?

Work backward from the job. It takes less than an afternoon, and it saves you from picking a degree that doesn’t lead where you want to go.

1. Pick two or three jobs from the tables above. Note which ones need a license or graduate degree.

2. Read five real postings for each job. Check whether they ask for a degree, a certification or both. If they name the ACSM-EP or CSCS, you have your credential target.

3. Check the rules that change soon. Candidates for ACSM-EP and CSCS face new degree requirements in 2027 and 2030, so match your program’s accreditation to your timeline.

4. Compare programs on cost and in-person hours. Use the online kinesiology ranking and filter for internships you can arrange where you live.

5. Ask each school what graduates do. A program that can name job titles and employers is showing you something a brochure can’t.
