North Carolina's public universities price online degrees by residency, and that gap is the biggest cost decision on this page. If you live here, the public programs run from $185 to $359.48 a credit. Students outside the state pay $667.04 to $1,044.06 a credit for the same online programs, and UNC Greensboro adds a third tier of $1,235.98 for non-residents receiving online education in North Carolina.

The private schools here, Methodist University, Montreat College and Lenoir-Rhyne University, publish one online rate for everyone, so your address doesn't change the price. Methodist is in Fayetteville, and its page lists Yellow Ribbon participation and Military Friendly recognition, which matters if you're stationed nearby.

BLS OEWS data for May 2025 shows what the local job market pays. North Carolina exercise physiologists earn a median of $52,450, with 370 employed, against a national median of $59,460. Exercise trainers and group fitness instructors earn $46,450 across 10,670 jobs, and coaches and scouts earn $43,840 across 8,530. Those are wage statistics, not a promise about your first job.

Programs in other states need approval to enroll you as a North Carolina resident. Most schools get it through SARA, an agreement among member states that sets comparable national standards for interstate postsecondary distance education. Look the school up in the SARA institution directory, and ask admissions to confirm in writing that it can enroll students who live in North Carolina.

A program is on this page when a school based in North Carolina publishes it as fully online or online with limited campus requirements. Programs are grouped by degree level and ordered by the six-factor score in our methodology: cost, outcomes, online flexibility, credential alignment, program depth and track record. What Online Tuition Costs North Carolina Residents

Start with the public schools, because residency sets the price. North Carolina Central University lists $185 a credit for residents in its online bachelor's and $727.67 for everyone else. Its online master's is $299.23 for residents and $1,038.57 for non-residents. The tuition table is labeled 2025-2026 and says rates are subject to change, so ask the bursar for the current figure.

East Carolina University charges residents $277.06 a credit for its distance education master's and non-residents $1,044.06, for up to 8 credits a term. Fees add $25.17 a credit for distance education and $3.33 for campus security, which brings one resident credit to $306.73. Take 9 or more credits and the resident flat rate is $2,493.54 a term.

UNC Greensboro splits students three ways for 2026-27. Residents pay $359.48 a credit, students living outside the state pay $667.04, and non-residents receiving online education in North Carolina pay $1,235.98. Its online Ed.D. totals $17,255.04 for 48 credits at the resident rate and $32,017.92 outside the state.

For the private schools, multiply it out. Montreat's bachelor's is $445 a credit over 120 credits, or $53,400 before transfer credit, and its master's is $630 over 30 credits, or $18,900. Methodist's is $445 over 124 credits, or $55,180, plus a $150 graduation fee. Lenoir-Rhyne's master's is $550 over 33 credits, or $18,150, and that rate leaves out fees. Montreat adds a $250 student fee each semester.

Two state options sit outside our ranking but change the math. The North Carolina Community College System says its tuition runs 75% less than NC four-year institutions, and its transfer agreements guarantee the transfer of certain classes into UNC universities. The Next NC Scholarship covers community college tuition and fees for eligible households under its income limit. Ask each school's aid office whether it applies to an online program.

Matching North Carolina Programs to Your Goal

Read the concentration before the degree title. East Carolina's online master's is the physical education pedagogy concentration, and its exercise physiology concentration is on campus. That makes it a fit for teachers and coaches, not for clinical work. The catalog lists a licensure option for the pedagogy concentration and two practicum courses, so ask how practicums work for online students.

UNC Greensboro's online master's is sport and exercise psychology: 30 credits, coursework only, asynchronous, with one start a year and a comprehensive exam. Its exercise physiology master's is on campus. The online Ed.D. needs a master's degree, three years of professional experience and three campus visits, and it ranks fourth of 12 doctorates on our national list.

Lenoir-Rhyne's master's is the closest North Carolina program to a general exercise science degree. It runs 33 credits with three starts a year and lets you choose a thesis or a practicum project. You'll need anatomy and physiology I and II with labs from the last 10 years, and the school may request GRE or MAT scores.

NCCU's master's has kinesiology, adapted sports and recreational therapy concentrations, needs no GRE and puts field experiences at your own location. Applications close July 1 for fall and November 1 for spring. Its bachelor's delivers lab content by recorded video and ends with a six-credit field placement.

Methodist's bachelor's accepts up to 93 of 124 credits and includes Clinical Exercise Physiology and Lab Methods courses. Our pre-physical-therapy ranking compares it with programs elsewhere. Montreat's bachelor's and master's are faith-integrated, and the master's has you take one 8-week class at a time.

Certification Rules for North Carolina Exercise Science Students

ACSM says that effective Aug. 15, 2027, candidates for the ACSM-EP (Certified Exercise Physiologist) and ACSM-CEP (Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist) must graduate from a program accredited by CAAHEP, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, or one that has started the process. The NSCA says that from Jan. 1, 2030, U.S. candidates for the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) need a bachelor's degree from a program accredited by CASCE, the Collegiate Accreditation for Strength and Conditioning Education. The current degree requirement stays in place through Dec. 31, 2029. Our certification-ready ranking lists online programs that meet either rule.

None of the nine North Carolina programs is on the CAAHEP list or the NSCA's CASCE list. NCCU's bachelor's names the ACSM-EP and CSCS as program goals, but a stated goal isn't accreditation, so ask any school whether it is accredited or in the process before you enroll.

North Carolina does have accredited campus programs. CAAHEP lists exercise science bachelor's programs at UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, Gardner-Webb and North Carolina Wesleyan, plus clinical exercise physiology master's programs at UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State and UNC Greensboro. Wake Technical Community College's associate in health and fitness science holds CAAHEP accreditation in personal fitness training.

The NSCA's CASCE list includes Appalachian State, Barton College and UNC Charlotte. None of these is listed as online, so if you can reach a campus, that is the safest path to either credential.

National Online Options for North Carolina Residents

If accreditation matters to you, look outside the state. Northeastern State University's bachelor's in Oklahoma is the only fully online bachelor's on our list with verified CAAHEP accreditation. The University of Missouri's strength and conditioning bachelor's is fully online and CASCE accredited, which lines up with the 2030 CSCS rule.

For a clinical path at the master's level, the University of Mary's clinical exercise physiology master's is CAAHEP accredited but has onsite requirements. If you want the highest score at each level, our best online exercise science degrees ranking leads with American Public University System's bachelor's and the University of Florida's master's. Neither has verified CAAHEP or CASCE accreditation, so check the certification you want first.

If price drives the decision, compare your in-state public rate with our cheapest programs ranking. A North Carolina resident at NCCU or East Carolina will often beat a national program's flat rate, but only if the concentration fits your goal.
