Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
SUNY Plattsburgh's 100% online M.S. in Fitness and Wellness Leadership is for people who want to run or grow a fitness business as much as train clients.
It's 30 credits, fully asynchronous, with flat semester tuition of $5,655 for New York residents and $6,785 for online students outside the state, plus $618.50 in fees. Exercise science and business courses share the schedule. It isn't a clinical or research degree, and no programmatic accreditation is listed.
SUNY Plattsburgh is a public college in northern New York, and this master's comes from its Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. The program page says it combines exercise science (biomechanics, physiology and exercise program design) with strength training, certification preparation and fitness business topics like accounting, marketing and management.
You take 10 required courses out of 13 offered online, for 30 credits. The school says most students graduate in one to one and a half years, and you can study part time or full time.
Admission asks for a bachelor's degree, a statement of purpose, a resume, one to three recommendation letters and transcripts. It's test optional, and a 3.0 GPA is strongly encouraged. The application fee is $75, waived for military-affiliated students.
Score
How the Score Adds Up
Each factor is scored 0 to 10 against other online master's programs. The weights are the same for every program.
Online Program Score 62.9 / 100
Darker bars mean stronger factor scores. Every bar also shows its number.
The full rubric is on the methodology page. A factor marked Peer Median had no published input, so it counts at half weight.
Online
How the Online Classes Work
There's no campus time and no required login time. SUNY says the faculty who teach online are the same ones who teach on campus, and that you can get a tutor for any class. If you want practical experience, you can add an internship, and faculty help you choose a site that matches your focus near home or in a city you like.
The program page says rolling admission lets you start in fall, winter, spring or summer. The graduate application page lists fall, spring and summer. Confirm whether a winter start exists before you plan around one.
SUNY designates it an Online Plus program, which the university describes as including holistic student support.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- Personal trainers and gym staff who want to move into management or ownership. The page names directors, general managers, business owners and wellness consultants alongside personal trainers and strength and conditioning instructors.
- Career changers with a bachelor's in another field. The page says the program is for people starting out in fitness as well as those already working in it, and it lists no prerequisite courses.
- Students who can't plan around a class schedule. SUNY says there's no set time when you have to log in, and the optional internship can be near your home. See our part-time online degrees for similar flexibility.
Who Should Skip It
- Anyone aiming for clinical exercise physiology, such as cardiac rehab. This is a fitness leadership degree, and the online exercise physiology degrees list fits better.
- Service members expecting a military tuition rate. SUNY's military rate is for undergraduates, and the tuition page says graduate students aren't eligible. Only the application fee is waived.
- Students who want a required internship or a thesis. The internship is optional, and no thesis or capstone is listed.
Curriculum
Curriculum
Two course descriptions show how the blend works. FIT 505 Advanced Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology studies the regulatory mechanisms, responses and adaptations that come from physical activity, along with energy systems and functional anatomy. FIT 525 Fitness Management and Entrepreneurship covers running a facility, marketing, sales, financial management, legal issues, insurance and writing a business plan. Each is three credits.
The school's own description names both halves of the degree. Expect exercise science to share your schedule with business courses instead of filling all of it. The page also lists resistance and strength training and certification preparation as parts of the sequence, and describes the courses as a progressive learning sequence built with input from industry professionals and internship sites.
Standout Features
- Curriculum blends exercise science (biomechanics, physiology, program design), resistance/strength training and fitness business (accounting, marketing, management)
- Named one of 10 best online fitness and wellness management master's by Sports Management Degree Hub, per the school
- SUNY Online Plus designated program
- Undergraduate FWL majors can take two graduate courses as seniors to get a head start
- Internship or Practicum
- Optional internship; faculty help select a site matching the student's focus, close to home or a city of interest.
- Internship Required
- No

Cost
Tuition and Fees
Plattsburgh charges exclusively online graduate students a flat tuition each semester, not a per-credit price. For 2026-27 that's $5,655 for New York residents and $6,785 for online non-residents, plus $618.50 in mandatory fees. Your semester bill is $6,273.50 as a resident or $7,403.50 as a non-resident.
Fall and spring together come to $12,547 for residents and $14,807 for non-residents. If you take the year and a half the school mentions, a third semester at the resident rate brings the total to $18,820.50. Students who live in Clinton County are also billed a student association fee and a student health fee.
The non-resident online rate applies if you take only online courses and haven't had a New York address during the state fiscal year, which runs July 1 to June 30.

Credentials
Which Certifications It Prepares You For
SUNY Plattsburgh is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the regional accreditor. No programmatic accreditation is listed for this master's.
The page says the curriculum prepares you for the ACSM personal trainer, NSCA-CSCS, Senior Fitness Association instructor and facility director certifications. ACSM-CPT and the other trainer exams don't require a degree, so you can earn them without this one. The CSCS requires a bachelor's, which you'd already hold to enroll. NSCA's rule starting January 1, 2030 applies to the bachelor's degree behind a CSCS, not to this master's.
From August 15, 2027, ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, and this isn't one. SUNY Plattsburgh's federal graduation rate is 59 percent for the whole university.
- Certification Preparation
- ACSM Certified Personal Trainer; NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
- Certification Notes
- ACSM-CPT (Certified Personal Trainer); NSCA-CSCS; Senior Fitness Association Senior Fitness Instructor (SFI); MFA fitness facility director

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- Exercise science shares the schedule with accounting, marketing and management courses, so the science load is lighter than in a dedicated exercise science master's.
- The two pages disagree on start terms. The program page lists four terms and the application page lists three.
- Flat semester tuition makes it hard to see the savings of part-time study, and a third semester adds $6,273.50 at the resident rate.
- The military tuition rate excludes graduate students.
