University of West Florida Online Movement Sciences & Health, M.S. - Sports Performance and Coaching Specialization

UWF's online master's is a coaching and physical activity leadership degree, not an exercise physiology degree. You take 30 credits in 16-week courses and shape assignments around your own job or team. Outside Florida, the draw is price: $494.22 per credit with the online waiver, fees included. Choose it if you coach or run programs. Skip it if you want lab-heavy science or a certification path.

The University of West Florida is a public university in Pensacola. This master's sits in the Department of Movement Sciences and Health inside the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health. Only one specialization of the M.S. in Movement Sciences & Health is offered online, Sports Performance and Coaching. The Exercise Science specialization is the campus track UWF ties to strength and clinical certifications.

UWF's catalog says the online specialization prepares you to lead people in coaching (collegiate, high school and youth), physical education, fitness, wellness and health. Instructors let you shape requirements around your interest or profession: season goals for coaches, units and lessons for teachers, prescription and assessment for fitness professionals.

UWF's 2026-27 online graduate table has four prices, and all of them include fees. Florida residents pay $385.85 per credit, or $11,575.50 for 30 credits. Non-Florida residents with the online waiver pay $494.22, or $14,826.60. The full nonresident rate is $1,144.43 per credit, or $34,332.90, so the waiver saves $19,506.30.

Read the waiver rules before you plan around it. It covers up to 90% of the non-resident portion, lasts until you finish or reach 45 credit hours, and isn't automatic. You submit a request every semester, allow 7 business days for processing, and a past semester can't be waived afterward. Alabama residents pay $490.85 per credit.

Active-duty members stationed outside Florida get a 100% waiver of nonresident tuition and fees under Florida law, according to UWF. The department's separate campus page lists $378.85 per credit for Florida residents, so budget from the online table.

30 credits at $494.22 a credit comes to $14,827 in tuition, before fees. At the in-state rate of $385.85, the same 30 credits come to $11,576.

Who It Fits

• Working coaches and program directors. Assignments adapt to your current position, so a season plan, a youth program or a gym's training model can become your coursework. UWF's page lists athletic coaches and scouts, fitness trainers and instructors, and fitness and wellness directors as job titles.
• Non-Florida residents watching cost. With the online out-of-state waiver you pay $494.22 per credit instead of $1,144.43, and UWF says the rates include all fees. Alabama residents pay a separate $490.85 per credit. Compare it with our online master's degrees in exercise science.
• Career changers who hold any bachelor's degree. You submit transcripts, a letter of intent, three professional references and the $30 application fee. UWF reviews your major as academic preparation, but doesn't make a science major mandatory.

Who Should Skip It

• Anyone who wants exercise physiology, anatomy or nutrition science. The eight required courses cover management, leadership, program design, supervision, professional issues, research methods, sport analytics, and teaching and motivation. None is a physiology course.
• Anyone who expects a certification path. The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam and ACSM's exercise physiologist exams set rules around your bachelor's degree, clinical hours and program accreditation, and a coaching master's doesn't change them. Read our CSCS guide first.
• Students who want a built-in internship. The 30 credits end with a thesis or a project, not supervised placement hours.

Eight core courses open the 30 credits: PET 5702 Advanced Management of Physical Activity Programs, PET 5708 Physical Activity Program Development, PET 5709 Leadership in Physical Activity and Sport, PET 5805 Analysis and Supervision in Sport and Physical Activity, PET 6015 Professional Issues in Physical Activity Disciplines, PET 6535 Research Methods in Sport Performance, PET 6514 Predictive Sport Performance Analytics and PET 6223 Teaching and Motivation for Physical Activity Leaders.

PET 6514 has you analyze sport performance with quantitative data, then recommend changes for individuals and teams. PET 6223 turns sport psychology research into coaching and teaching frameworks.

The last 6 credits come from PET 6536 Advanced Strategies and Tactics of Sport Performance, SPM 5408 Sport Promotion and Communication, or PET 6950 Project in Lieu of Thesis. The project has no set format. You and the instructor choose the topic, and UWF says you're guided toward completion over two semesters.

Courses run 16 weeks, and UWF lists January 6 as the next start. Application deadlines are August 1 for fall, December 1 for spring and April 24 for summer. UWF estimates 24 months to finish.

Assignments are the selling point. UWF says you adapt them to your field and position, then talk through outcomes and changes with faculty and peers, with professional feedback on how your changes worked.

UWF is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), a regional accreditor. The online program page names no programmatic accreditation and no certification exam prep.

The campus Exercise Science track is different. UWF's department page says it's recognized by the Education Recognition Program and prepares you for the CSCS and ACSM's clinical exercise physiologist certification. NSCA has since moved to CASCE, the Collegiate Accreditation for Strength and Conditioning Education. The CAAHEP list we pulled on September 29, 2026 includes a UWF master's in Exercise Science, and only Sports Performance and Coaching is online.

From August 15, 2027, ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a program accredited by CAAHEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) or one that has started the process. From January 1, 2030, U.S. CSCS candidates need a bachelor's from a CASCE-accredited program.

Where this degree can lead: Exercise Science Jobs.

• There's no science core. If you expect exercise physiology or nutrition courses, the required list won't deliver them.
• UWF's pages quote different prices. The department page shows $378.85 per credit for Florida residents, while the online table shows $385.85, so make sure you're reading the online rate.
• The waiver isn't automatic, and a request can't be applied to a semester that has already passed.
• UWF's federal graduation rate is 59 percent. That figure covers the whole university, not this program, but it's the only outcome number we have.

• Do any classes meet live, or is every course asynchronous, and is a Pensacola visit ever required?
• Can I finish in fewer than 24 months if I take summer courses?
• Which of the last 6 credits do online students usually choose: PET 6536, SPM 5408 or the PET 6950 project?
