Verdict

Our Verdict on the B.S.

PennWest's online exercise science bachelor's is a lower-cost degree for people heading toward personal training, wellness coaching and general fitness work. Pennsylvania residents pay $347 per credit, others pay $354, and military students pay $250. The tradeoff is thin published detail and no programmatic accreditation, so it won't meet the CAAHEP rule for ACSM exams from August 15, 2027 or the CASCE rule for the CSCS from January 1, 2030.

Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) is a public university in Pennsylvania's state system, formed from California, Clarion and Edinboro universities. Its Global Online campus offers Exercise Science (Human Performance and Wellness), a 120-credit bachelor's listed as fully online. The listing says four years. A landing page says as little as two years if you convert experience and certifications into credit.

PennWest names anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, fitness assessment, nutrition and program design as the foundation. The California campus page for the same degree describes an exercise science major with a business, marketing and management base, and it lists Global Online in its degrees table. Ask for the online course list before assuming the two match. Its federal graduation rate is 52 percent university-wide, and it admits 94 percent of applicants.

Cost

What It Costs, With the Military Rate

Tuition for 2026-27 is $347 per credit for Pennsylvania residents and $354 for everyone else. For 120 credits that's $41,640 in state and $42,480 out of state. PennWest adds a technology fee and an instructional support fee, so its own totals are $416.90 and $458.90 per credit, or $50,028 and $55,068 across the degree.

Military and veteran students and eligible dependents pay $250 per credit, or $30,000 for 120 credits, regardless of residency. A term of 12 to 18 credits costs $4,169 in tuition for a resident. Transfer credit is where the savings are, so start with the courtesy evaluation PennWest offers before you apply.

120 credits at $354 a credit comes to $42,480 in tuition, before fees. At the in-state rate of $347, the same 120 credits come to $41,640.

Fit

Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not

Who It Fits

  • Personal trainers and coaches who want a degree behind what they already do. PennWest says students are eligible to earn NASM and NASE credentials while enrolled: Certified Personal Trainer, Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Certified Speed Specialist. NASM is the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
  • Pennsylvania residents watching the budget. In-state tuition is $347 per credit, or $41,640 for 120 credits before fees. PennWest's own all-in figure with its technology and instructional support fees is $416.90 per credit, which is $50,028.
  • Military and veteran students and eligible dependents. The rate is $250 per credit wherever you live, so 120 credits comes to $30,000 in tuition. PennWest also gives military and veteran students priority scheduling and reviews military credit.
  • Adults with credentials and experience. PennWest looks at Prior Learning Assessment, CLEP, DANTES and AP credit, and takes transfer credit with a grade of D or better.

Who Should Skip It

  • Anyone aiming at the ACSM exercise physiologist exams after August 15, 2027. Candidates need a program accredited by CAAHEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) or one in process. PennWest lists none, and it isn't on our CAAHEP list. Browse online exercise physiology degrees instead.
  • Future CSCS candidates who will graduate after January 1, 2030. PennWest isn't on NSCA's list of CASCE-accredited programs. Look at online strength and conditioning degrees.
  • Students who choose from a published curriculum. The online bachelor's doesn't have a dedicated program page listing courses, so you'll rely on an advisor's degree plan.

Curriculum

Curriculum

PennWest publishes topics, not course titles, for the online bachelor's. Its Global Online listing says you study anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and wellness and strength programming, and the landing page adds biomechanics, fitness assessment, nutrition and program design. Career paths on the listing include strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer, wellness coordinator, health coach, corporate wellness specialist and exercise physiologist, with settings varying.

The campus page shows what else PennWest's exercise science major can include. It describes a foundation in business, marketing and management, and it shows a Golf Performance concentration offered in person at California and not at Global Online. The online plan is the one to get in writing. There's no required internship, capstone or lab listed for it.

Standout Features

Online

The Online Format

PennWest says most Global Online courses are asynchronous, with weekly deadlines and discussions on Brightspace. Students spend 10 to 15 hours a week per course, and undergraduates often take two or three courses a term. That's 20 to 45 hours a week, which is a lot beside a full-time job. Seven-week accelerated courses run 15 to 20 hours a week per course.

You're paired with a success coach from day one, and PennWest says online courses are taught by the same professors who teach on its campuses, many of them tenured and full time. The exercise science program was created by athletic trainer Dr. Barry McGlumphy, who says he has worked with the Kansas City Chiefs for 10 years.

Credentials

Which Certifications It Prepares You For

PennWest is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. That's institutional accreditation. PennWest lists no programmatic accreditation for this degree, and the campus page calls the bachelor's accredited without naming a program accreditor.

The credentials it does support are NASM's. Dr. McGlumphy calls PennWest a premiere academic provider for NASM. Personal trainer certifications don't require a degree at all. The ACSM and NSCA rules that are coming tie eligibility to accredited degrees, and PennWest isn't listed with CAAHEP or CASCE. For pay context, BLS puts the median exercise physiologist wage at $59,460 (May 2025).

Trade-Offs

Drawbacks to Weigh

  • There's no dedicated program page for the online bachelor's. The link from PennWest's undergraduate listing sends you to the general programs page, so details come from a listing and a landing page.
  • The timeline is a range. The listing says four years, and the landing page says as little as two years. PennWest doesn't say how many credits your certifications can earn.
  • No required internship, capstone or lab is listed, so hands-on hours for coaching or clinical jobs are yours to find.
  • No programmatic accreditation means the accredited-degree rules for ACSM and NSCA credentials could close doors for you later.
