Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
PennWest's online M.S. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion has run since 2002, and it's built for people who train clients and athletes rather than people headed for clinical exercise physiology.
Tuition is $557 per credit for Pennsylvania residents and $568 for everyone else, and fees lift the real rate to $692.07 and $767. It's 100% online, starts six times a year, and military students pay $399 per credit. Confirm the concentration list with admissions before you commit, because PennWest's own pages disagree about it.
Pennsylvania Western University, called PennWest, is a public university formed from California, Clarion and Edinboro, and this degree runs through its Global Online campus. Most concentrations total 39 credits. Applied Sport Science is 45, and a dual concentration is 48 (54 if it includes Applied Sport Science). PennWest's brochure says you can finish in as little as 12 months full-time or 18 months part-time.
You can start in January, March, July, August, October or December. The school's fact sheet says you never need to come to campus. The brochure sets regular admission at a 3.0 cumulative GPA, with conditional admission for lower GPAs. Applicants at 2.5 or below add a resume and two professional letters of recommendation. The application takes about 20 minutes.

How the Score Adds Up
Each factor is scored 0 to 10 against other online master's programs. The weights are the same for every program.

Darker bars mean stronger factor scores. Every bar also shows its number.

Curriculum
11 Concentrations and the Core Courses
Every student takes ten core courses: Orientation to Exercise Science and Health Promotion, Essentials of Human Movement Science, Nutrition for Peak Performance, Exercise Physiology: Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Exercise Science Research Theory, Evaluating Exercise Science Research, SAQ and Endurance Training, Industrial, Clinical, and Corporate Wellness, Business and Entrepreneurship in the Fitness Industry, and Leadership and Professional Development.
On top of the core, the brochure lists ten concentrations, such as Tactical Strength and Conditioning (Advanced Techniques, Program Design and Current Topics courses) and Sport Psychology (including Psychological Aspects of Sport Injury and Rehabilitation).
But the current program page says 'There are no concentrations for this program,' and the brochure is dated January 2023. Treat the concentrations as something to verify. Optional electives include a Graduate Exercise Science Internship (1 to 12 credits) and the research project. Applied Sport Science requires a 6-credit internship.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- Trainers and coaches who want coursework tied to a certification. The brochure links Wellness and Fitness to the NASM Certified Personal Trainer exam, Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention to the NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist exam and Rehabilitation Science to the NASM Certified Exercise Specialist exam. Wellness Coaching, built with Wellcoaches, prepares you for a health and wellness coach certification that the brochure says ACSM endorses.
- Military members, veterans and first responders. The master's rate is $399 per credit for active-duty members, veterans and eligible dependents, wherever they live, with priority scheduling. The Tactical Strength and Conditioning concentration was written for military personnel, law enforcement and firefighters.
- Working adults and career changers. Part-time study takes 18 months, and the brochure invites 'a fitness enthusiast wanting to change careers' alongside seasoned professionals. Graduate students usually take one or two courses a term.
Who Should Skip It
- Anyone aiming at ACSM-CEP or clinical exercise physiology work. There's no clinical placement and no CAAHEP accreditation here. Start with the clinical exercise physiology master's list instead.
- Students who want a thesis. The only research option is a 2-credit Exercise Science Research Project, and it sits on top of your required credits.
- Students who need live lectures. PennWest says most courses are asynchronous, with weekly deadlines and discussion posts, so the structure comes from due dates rather than class meetings.
Cost
What It Costs, With the Military Rate
PennWest's 2026-27 graduate table shows in-state tuition of $557 per credit, and with a $44.80 technology fee and a $90.27 instructional support fee the total is $692.07. Out-of-state tuition is $568, and with fees the total is $767. A 9-credit term costs $6,228.63 in-state and $6,903 out-of-state.
For a 39-credit concentration, that's $26,990.73 in-state and $29,913 out-of-state with fees. Tuition alone is $21,723 and $22,152. Military students pay $399 per credit for the master's, which is $15,561 over 39 credits, and you should ask whether that rate covers the fees. The brochure says NASM partners with PennWest each year to award full tuition to eligible applicants.
39 credits at $568 a credit comes to $22,152 in tuition, before fees. At the in-state rate of $557, the same 39 credits come to $21,723.

Online
The Online Format
Courses run on Brightspace. Each week brings new video lectures, readings, discussion boards and assignments due by deadline, and you'll be paired with a success coach from day one. PennWest says most students spend 10 to 15 hours a week per course. Graduate students usually take one or two courses a term, so budget your week by multiplying.
A part-time pace stretches the degree to 18 months, and a dual concentration takes at least 18 months even at full speed. The brochure lists the faculty, including program coordinator Dr. Barry McGlumphy, a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Training Hall of Fame, and Dr. Ben Reuter, associate editor-in-chief of the Strength & Conditioning Journal. The only required internship belongs to Applied Sport Science.

Credentials
Which Certifications It Prepares You For
PennWest holds institutional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The program lists no CAAHEP accreditation, and it isn't on the CAAHEP list we pulled on September 29, 2026, so the August 15, 2027 ACSM rule doesn't help you here. Personal trainer exams don't require a degree, so the master's adds depth rather than a gate.
The NSCA rule starting January 1, 2030 concerns the bachelor's degree behind a CSCS, which this master's can't change. Our CSCS guide explains it. PennWest's fact sheet claims over 120 alumni working in professional sports, and that's the school's claim, not something we verified. No degree guarantees a job.
- Certification Preparation
- NASM Certified Personal Trainer; NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist
- Certification Notes
- NASM Certified Personal Trainer (Wellness and Fitness concentration); NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist (Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention); NASM Certified Exercise Specialist (Rehabilitation Science); Health and Wellness Coach certification via Wellcoaches (endorsed by ACSM)

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- The brochure is dated January 2023 and lists ten concentrations, while the current program page says there are none. The certification links come from that brochure.
- The credit count depends on your path: 39, 45, 48 or 54. PennWest's Global Online listing has also shown 30, so pin down your exact total.
- Fees are big. They add $135.07 per credit for in-state students and $199 for out-of-state students on top of tuition.
- There's no thesis, no clinical placement and no programmatic accreditation, so the degree points toward training, coaching and wellness careers.
