Western Michigan University Online Exercise Science, MS

Western Michigan's M.S. in Exercise Science went fully online in Fall 2026, so you'd be joining a lab-based master's in its first online year. Tuition is $868.04 per credit, which is $26,041.20 for 30 credits, and the school's own pages disagree on whether the degree is 30 or 36 credits. It fits research-minded students and pre-PT applicants better than ACSM-track students.

Western Michigan University is a public research university in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This master's sits in the Department of Human Performance and Health Education, part of the College of Education and Human Development. The program page describes advanced study of the physiological, biomechanical and neuromuscular foundations of human movement, with research design and data analysis included.

Admission is rolling. You submit a resume or CV, three recommendations, a statement of 500 to 1,500 words and an official bachelor's transcript. The General GRE isn't required. The application is due one week before fall courses begin.

• Strength coaches and fitness staff who want more science behind their programming. The sample schedule ends with Advanced Principles of Strength and Conditioning, and the school's career list includes cardiac rehabilitation, corporate wellness, health and fitness promotion and strength and conditioning.
• Out-of-state students. The fully online graduate rate is a single $868.04 per credit, while non-residents on the main campus pay $1,326.71.

Who Should Skip It

• Skip it if you want a proven online track record. Fall 2026 was the first online term, so there are no online graduates to talk to yet.
• Skip it if you need to graduate from a program accredited by CAAHEP or NSCA's CASCE. Neither list carries this master's, though the CASCE list shows Western's undergraduate B.S. in Strength and Conditioning.
• Skip it if price is the deciding factor. At $26,041.20 for 30 credits, it costs more than our cheapest online exercise science degrees.

The Board of Trustees rate sheet and WMU's cost page list $868.04 per credit for students enrolled exclusively in fully online programs. At 30 credits that's $26,041.20. If the 36 credits from the accelerated program page apply, it's $31,249.44, or $5,208.24 more.

The main-campus required fees, $481.50 a semester at 5 or more credits, are assessed to main-campus programs, so they shouldn't appear on an online-only bill. Class-related fees can still apply for courses that use laboratories or field trips, so ask for an itemized estimate.

The page says that starting in Fall 2026 you can complete the program 100% online and receive the same academic preparation as before. The same page still promises hands-on laboratory experiences and state-of-the-art laboratories. Find out how the two fit together before you enroll.

The sample schedule runs Summer II, fall, spring and Summer I, then the capstone, so plan for roughly a year of terms plus the capstone. Application timing points to a fall start, so ask whether Summer II entry exists. Four faculty are listed, including a program coordinator.

Western is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and it completed a Year 4 Assurance Review in 2025 with no monitoring or conditions. The master's lists no programmatic accreditation and no certification prep.

The ACSM's clinical exercise physiologist route with a master's needs 600 hours of hands-on clinical experience, and from August 15, 2027 ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program or one that has started the process. • It's the first online year for a program that still advertises labs and top-of-the-line equipment, and no online cohort exists to ask.
• Western's pages conflict on the length. The program page says 30 credits, and the accelerated master's page says the M.S. requires 36. The gap is $5,208.24 at the online rate.
• The career claim says 100% of Exercise Science graduates were employed or continuing their education within three months. It gives no year, cohort size or degree level, so don't read it as an outcome for this master's.
• The application asks for three recommendations and a 500 to 1,500 word statement, a heavier lift than programs that take a transcript and a form.
