Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
East Texas A&M's Sports Coaching master's is 30 credits, 100% online, and built for people who coach rather than people who test or prescribe exercise. It's only partly exercise science. You'll take sports conditioning, sports nutrition and sport psychology, but no exercise physiology or biomechanics.
It suits a teacher-coach or club coach who wants a graduate degree in about a year. If you want clinical or lab-based work, look at a different emphasis or a different school.
East Texas A&M University is a public school in Commerce, Texas, part of the Texas A&M University System and formerly known as Texas A&M University-Commerce. It's accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The Sports Coaching Emphasis is one of four routes inside the M.S. in Health, Kinesiology & Sports Studies, next to Athletic Administration, Exercise Science and Sport Management.
The school says the curriculum covers four areas of coaching: tactical, technical, psychological and physical. Courses run 8 weeks, and you can start in fall, spring or summer. Sarah Mitchell, Ph.D., is listed as the graduate program coordinator.
Online
8-Week Terms and Start Dates
ETAMU calls the degree offered 100% online, and you can take courses in the fall, spring and summer. Most classes last 8 weeks.
The internship is where the picture gets fuzzy. The catalog says it needs instructor approval and completion of an internship seminar in May or December before you enroll. That timing can push your finish date. The page also tells students to check the schedule of classes for locations and times, so ask what, if anything, meets in person.
After you apply, you may get provisional status. That lets you take one semester of courses, but you won't be eligible for financial aid until every document is in and you're admitted.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- You coach now, or you teach and coach after school. ETAMU says the program is designed for current educators and working professionals, and the 8-week courses keep each class short.
- You want to finish quickly. The page lists a length of one year, which means stacking courses across fall, spring and summer without much slack.
- Your interest is leading athletes more than measuring them. The coursework leans on coaching theory, the psychology and sociology of sport, and training program design.
Who Should Skip It
- Skip it if you want to work as a clinical exercise physiologist or exercise tester. The required list has no exercise physiology, cardiopulmonary physiology or fitness testing course. Those sit in the department's Exercise Science emphasis.
- Skip it if you're an international student. The program page says it isn't available to international students.
- Skip it if you're counting on a fitness training certificate. The page mentions graduate certificates in coaching and fitness training, but the three it lists are Instructional Coach, Organization Development and Talent Development.
Curriculum
What You Will Study
Think coaching degree with a science layer. The 15-credit core is HHPK 595 Critiquing and Conducting Research, HHPK 617 Stat Procedures for Health and Human Performance, HHPS 535 Sociology of Sport and Physical Activity, HHPK 528 Sport Psychology and HHPS 566 Issues in International Sport.
The coaching block adds HHPK 530 Sports Conditioning, HHPH 531 Nutrition and Optimal Performance and HHPK 590 Sport Coaching. Only the first two are training science, so about 6 of your 30 credits. You also pick one support course, such as Adapted Kinesiology, Sport Law or Governance and Ethics in Sport.
A 3-credit internship, HHPK 537, is required, and every student takes a comprehensive exam.

Cost
Tuition and Fees
ETAMU doesn't publish a per-credit rate on the program page. For fall 2026, tuition and fees for nine graduate credit hours are $3,851 for Texas residents and $7,703 for non-residents. Stretching that over 30 credits gives about $12,837 for residents and $25,677 for non-residents.
That's an estimate, and extras apply. Online courses carry a $50 per hour fee, which would be $1,500 across 30 credits if it isn't already in the nine-hour total. Lab fees run $5 to $30 per course.
New master's students starting in summer 2026, fall 2026 or spring 2027 may qualify for a renewable Quick Start Grant of $250 or $500 per semester.

Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
ETAMU has SACSCOC reaffirmed accreditation, which covers the university. This program lists no programmatic accreditation and no certification exam it prepares you for.
The three graduate certificates on the page are about instructional coaching, organization development and talent development. They're academic credentials, not exams like the CSCS.
The 2027 and 2030 rules don't run through this degree. ACSM-EP and ACSM-CEP candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program starting August 15, 2027. U.S. CSCS candidates need a bachelor's from a CASCE-accredited program starting January 1, 2030, and that's about your bachelor's, not this master's.

Score
Where It Loses Points
Each factor is scored 0 to 10 against other online master's programs. The weights are the same for every program.
Online Program Score 42.5 / 100
Darker bars mean stronger factor scores. Every bar also shows its number.
The full rubric is on the methodology page. A factor marked Peer Median had no published input, so it counts at half weight.
Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- It's a borderline fit for exercise science. Six of the 30 credits are training science, and the rest is research methods, statistics, sociology, psychology, international sport and an internship.
- The internship needs instructor approval and a seminar in May or December beforehand. That's easy to miss and hard to schedule around an 8-week term calendar.
- The page contradicts itself on certificates. It advertises coaching and fitness training certificates, then lists three that aren't.
- The real price is hard to see. The rate is published for nine hours, not per credit, and online and lab fees come on top.
