Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
Texas Woman's University offers this master's mostly as a nutrition degree with an exercise physiology core, and its coursework-only option is fully online. It fits someone who already has the science background and wants to work with athletes, first responders, or corporate wellness clients. It isn't a clinical exercise physiology degree, it doesn't make you a registered dietitian, and its prerequisites will block many career changers.
Texas Woman's University is a public school in Denton, Texas, and this degree is run by its Nutrition and Food Sciences department, not the kinesiology department. Starting in Fall 2026, the plan dropped to 30 semester credit hours. You can take it on the Denton or Houston campus, or fully online through the coursework-only option. The thesis option is offered only on campus.
The online plan is heavier on nutrition than on exercise. Three required courses cover macronutrients, micronutrients, and nutrition in disease. One required course is Nutrition and Exercise, and you choose one exercise physiology course, either Advanced or Applied. The rest is a practicum, research methods or statistics, a capstone, and 6 credits of electives.
Curriculum
Courses, Thesis and Capstone
The coursework-only plan totals 30 credits. Required courses are NFS 5213 Human Nutrition and Metabolism: Macronutrients, NFS 5223 on micronutrients, NFS 5363 Human Nutrition in Disease, a research or statistics course, and NFS 5633 Capstone Lecture. Then comes NFS 5583 Nutrition and Exercise, one of NFS 5163 Advanced Exercise Physiology or KINS 5553 Applied Exercise Physiology, and a practicum.
The practicum is NFS 5133 or NFS 5681 taken three times, and TWU says it can be done at one site or several. Electives include Aging and Health, Epidemiology, Eating Behaviors and Eating Disorders, Nutraceuticals and Dietary Supplements, and Pathophysiology and Treatment of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

- NFS 5521 Nutrition for Collegiate and Professional Sports
Standout Features
- Degree plan reduced to 30 semester credit hours starting Fall 2026
- Requires Nutrition and Exercise plus Advanced or Applied Exercise Physiology; electives include Graded Exercise Testing and Hormonal Responses during Exercise
- Can be completed standalone or alongside a TWU ACEND-accredited RDN preparation program
- Capstone
- NFS 5633 Capstone Lecture (coursework-only option)
- Thesis
- Thesis (30 SCH, Denton/Houston only) or coursework-only (30 SCH, online available)

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- Nutrition, dietetics, or health science graduates who want a sports focus. You already have the chemistry and nutrition courses TWU requires, and this degree adds exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and practicum hours.
- Registered dietitians or dietetics students who want to add a specialty. TWU says you can pair the degree with an ACEND-accredited registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) preparation program, and its catalog says an outside ACEND-accredited dietetic internship qualifies you for dietetics careers.
- Coaches, trainers, and wellness staff with a strong science transcript. The elective list includes Nutrition for Collegiate and Professional Sports, Graded Exercise Testing, and Hormonal Responses during Exercise.
Who Should Skip It
- Career changers without chemistry. TWU asks for 9 to 12 hours of chemistry including organic and biochemistry, plus anatomy and physiology, introductory nutrition, and 6 to 9 hours of upper-level nutrition. A general exercise science bachelor's usually won't cover that.
- Anyone who wants a clinical exercise physiology degree. TWU's separate M.S. in Kinesiology with an exercise physiology emphasis lists ACSM-CEP preparation, but its courses are on the Denton campus only. Look at our online exercise physiology degrees instead.
- Students who need a research lab or thesis. The thesis option isn't available online, and the faculty research TWU describes happens in on-campus laboratories.
Cost
Tuition and Fees
TWU's program page doesn't list a per-credit rate for the online option, so budget from what the school does publish. Its Fall 2026 to Spring 2027 cost table for graduate students lists $5,184 in tuition for 9 credit hours a semester, plus $2,970 in fees. That works out to $576 per credit hour, or $17,280 in tuition for 30 credits.
That table is a general campus estimate, and it doesn't say whether online students pay the same fees. The application fee is $50 ($75 for international applicants). Use TWU's tuition estimator or ask the department for an online quote, because the fee line in that table is more than half the size of the tuition line.

Online
The Online Format
The catalog says the program is offered 100% online, and the program page lists the coursework-only option as fully online. TWU calls the reduced 30-credit format flexible for working professionals. Its department accepts applications on a rolling basis and recommends finishing by June 15 for fall, October 1 for spring, and April 1 for summer.
The page advertises graduating in as little as 16 months, but it attaches that claim to the Denton and Houston campuses. It doesn't say whether the online pace is the same. The practicum is the part to plan around. TWU doesn't say how online students find or supervise sites, so you'd be sorting that out with the program coordinator.
- Campus Requirements
- Coursework-only option is available fully online (also offered in Denton and Houston). Thesis option is Denton/Houston only. Optional dietetics pathway needs a separate ACEND-accredited program with supervised practice. Required practicum (NFS 5133 or NFS 5681) may be completed at one or multiple sites; whether it is remote is not stated.

Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
This degree has no CAAHEP or CASCE accreditation, and none of TWU's pages claim it prepares you for a certification exam. That's normal for a nutrition department degree, but it does mean the August 15, 2027 ACSM rule and the January 1, 2030 NSCA rule don't help or hurt it directly. They apply to the exercise science or exercise physiology bachelor's or master's you'd hold.
Being a registered dietitian is a separate credential. TWU's catalog says completing an external, free-standing ACEND-accredited dietetic internship after this degree meets the requirements for a dietetics career. The Houston pathway that builds dietetics in requires 39 credits, so it's a different program than the online one.
- Pre-Professional Preparation
- Can be done alongside an ACEND-accredited RDN preparation program; completing an external ACEND-accredited dietetic internship qualifies students for dietetics careers.

Score
Where It Loses Points
Each factor is scored 0 to 10 against other online master's programs. The weights are the same for every program.
Online Program Score 44.7 / 100
Darker bars mean stronger factor scores. Every bar also shows its number.
The full rubric is on the methodology page. A factor marked Peer Median had no published input, so it counts at half weight.
Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- The exercise content is limited. You take one required exercise course and one exercise physiology course, and everything else leans nutrition.
- The prerequisite list is long, and TWU's page says provisional admission is possible at a 3.0 GPA but standard admission needs 3.25 on your last 60 undergraduate credits.
- No online price is published on the program page. The campus figures we found may not match what an online student pays.
- TWU's federal graduation rate is 49 percent, which covers the whole university, not this program.
